Signs you may need some support with your little one’s fussy eating.

A little fussiness can be quite a normal phase of toddler-hood/childhood, as kids are still learning and exploring foods, developing preferences and building that feeding relationship with you.
BUT did you know that more than 30% of kids may NOT simply grow out of it!? And even for those other 70% that do grow out of it...it typically takes the right approach and support form the parent.

If fussy eating continues past a normal ‘phase’, then it is stressful for the family and can begin to impact nutrition and health of the child.

So if you have noticed any of these signs, your little one’s fussy eating may no longer be ‘normal’ and you may need some support to turn things around:

🚩 Meal times feel stressful for you and them
🚩 You have any concerns for their growth and development
🚩 They currently accept and eat less than 20 different foods
🚩 They are not progressing through the textures of food - ie still eating puree or mashed food only
🚩 They are refusing a whole food group- such as all veggies or all meat etc
🚩 They are starting to reject previously accepted foods
🚩 consistent gagging, vomiting or choking at mealtimes
🚩 sensory sensitivities/aversions that limit the variety in their diet- eg they refuse all wet or squishy foods
🚩 They sop eating ‘safe’ foods
🚩 They have ‘meltdowns’ or cannot regulate emotions around new foods
🚩 You can see that they’re anxious around food or mealtimes
🚩 Fussy eating persists for months or years

Your feeding-style and approach can influence whether any fussy eating stage passes quickly, or whether it gets worse and lasts for much longer than it otherwise would have.

—> So get on the right track with managing their fussy eating and your peace of mind.

Not too beige!! Colour of the plate matters—but beige can be nutritious too!
🤍

This plate looks pretty plain, (and definitely not like a rainbow!), but it covers 4 food groups!
🍞 Grains (bread)
🧀 dairy (cheese)
🥜 meat alternative (nuts and chia seeds)
🍌 fruit (banana).

For fussy eaters, variety is really tricky! AIM for colours, but also know that variety isn’t only colour—it’s nutrient content.

Getting kids involved in the kitchen, even if it is just picking the parsley from the garden, helps them to:

💪🏼 become more familiar and comfortable with new foods, therefore be more willing to try them.

💪🏼 be more willing to eat the food they’ve been involved in preparing.

Get them involved. Even with small jobs.

Did you know that there are 4 different feeding-styles?

Feeding style isn't about WHAT you feed your kids, but HOW you go about it, the strategies you use, the language you use...the overall approach you take.

ARE YOU?

Indulgent?
- Offers little guidance or structure, allowing children to eat whatever foods they like or ask for, and whenever they ask for food.

Permissive?
- Has minimal focus on a child's eating habits or nutritional needs, resulting in a lack of guidance and structure.

Controlling?
- Also known as authoritarian and focuses on control and strict rules around eating, often overriding the child's preferences and appetite.

Authoritative?
- Balances structure and responsiveness, encouraging children to eat a variety of foods while respecting their hunger and fullness cues.

DO YOU KNOW WHICH ONE IS MOST BENEFICIAL FOR HELPING FUSSY EATING?
