❔When is surgery considered for a dislocated shoulder?

Most first-time shoulder dislocations can be treated without surgery. However, surgery may be considered if:
• The shoulder keeps dislocating or feels unstable
• There is damage to the labrum, ligaments or bone
• You’re at higher risk of recurrent dislocation, particularly if you’re young and active
• Non-surgical treatment hasn’t improved your symptoms

🩻 One of the most common questions we’re asked is whether you need imaging before seeing one of our TOC specialists.

To book an appointment with one of our TOC specialists, you’ll need a referral from your GP. In many cases, your GP will also arrange imaging, such as an X-ray or MRI, before your appointment to help your surgeon assess your condition.

To help us make the most of your consultation, it’s important that:

✔️ Your GP includes your imaging reports with your referral where possible.
✔️ You let our team know where your scans were performed, so we can access and review the images before your appointment.

If further imaging is required, your specialist will discuss this with you during your consultation and arrange any additional tests if needed.
