Starting a busy day early, arriving at St Vincent’s Private to the beautiful labour ward and then meeting baby Josiah for the very first time. 💙

A huge congratulations to Danielle and Wahieb on the safe arrival of your beautiful son. It’s always a privilege to share in these moments and help families welcome a new little person into the world.

Have you ever wondered when the most popular day and months of the year are to have a baby?🎂

After delivering close to 20,000 babies, I’ve always found it fascinating how some days or months in the birth suite seem busier than others. This chart provides a snapshot of the days of the year that are more common to have a baby and yes, September certainly stands out.

What is more interesting is this trend is consistent across the northern and southern hemispheres. Maybe it is due to a mode of thought that sees the beginning of a new calendar year as a chance for hope and new beginnings? Or maybe it’s just a coincidence!

As an obstetrician, who loves statistics and has had the privilege of helping deliver babies into the world, patterns like this never stop being interesting.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mums out there—thank you for the love, strength, patience, and guidance you bring to your families each and every day.

This photo is around 10 years old, taken when our five children were much younger, and is a great reminder of how quickly time passes. A special thank you to my wife for everything she has done for our family over the years.

Wishing all mums a very special Mother’s Day! 💐

If you haven’t already met her, this is Tanya Todorov—better known in our rooms as T2 ✨

Tanya has been a Midwife since 2005, with extensive experience across both public and private maternity care. I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Tanya for many years—even back to some of her very first births as a midwife.

With a true passion for pregnancy, labour, and birth, Tanya brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and a calm, supportive presence to every woman she cares for. Alongside her role in our practice, Tanya also works as a Clinical Midwife in Birth Suite at St Vincent’s Private Hospital.

We’re very lucky to have T2 as part of our team 🤍

What should you actually eat during pregnancy? 🤰✨
There’s a lot of noise out there about “perfect” pregnancy diets—but the reality is much simpler.
Most of the time, eating a balanced mix of veggies, whole grains, and protein will give your baby everything they need. Folic acid is one of the few supplements that truly stands out for early development.
And when it comes to weight gain—there’s no old-school rulebook anymore. It’s all about what’s appropriate for your body and starting point.
The non-negotiables to keep on your radar:
• Folic acid – key for early development
• Calcium – ~1500mg/day (think 3 serves of dairy) 🥛
• Iron – commonly low, supplements are often needed
• Iodine – essential for growth and development
• Fish oil – may help lower childhood asthma risk

Born 8 weeks early at 1.3kg, this little fighter is the first baby for proud parents Sas and Danith. Their journey has begun in
St Vincent’s Special Care Nursery, where the next few weeks will be focused on growth, feeding, and building strength.

When newborns arrive early, gestational age plays a key role in outcomes — each additional week of development makes a meaningful difference.

Premature birth (birth before 38 weeks) occurs in around 6% of pregnancies, with about 1% being born before 30 weeks. With modern neonatal care, these babies are supported closely as they grow and develop.
