Louise Bourgeois’s quote “To be an artist, you need to exist in a world of silence” is about creating the mental space needed to make art.

She suggests that an artist needs moments of solitude, stillness and freedom from outside noise—other people’s expectations, opinions and distractions—in order to hear their own thoughts and instincts.

It doesn’t necessarily mean literal silence. It means turning inward and trusting your own creative voice.

In essence: great art often begins when the noise of the outside world becomes quiet.

I worked on my finalist piece ‘Ground Colony’ today to iron out the kinks and sort out the base. A beautiful day out at Lisarow at centralcoastsculptureschool

The sun was glorious! So excited for the Sculptures in the Garden, Mudgee in October!

Today I added a little bit here and a little bit there. The good old ‘knowing when to stop’ always comes into play right about now. It is complete BUT finalising the finer details before sealing!

I got to play with the big winch out there today to manoeuvre my piece around so I could get underneath it. That was worth the trip in itself…

Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese outsider artist who reached superstar status after decades living in a psychiatric hospital, has died aged 97.

Kusama died in a Tokyo hospital on 14 August. Her death was announced by her studio in a statement on her website.

“Throughout an extraordinary lifetime devoted entirely to artistic creation, Kusama pursued an internationally acclaimed career as a pioneering avant-garde artist whose creative practice encompassed visual art, performance, fiction, and poetry,” the statement read. “She continued to paint until her final days, never setting aside her brush, and continued exploration of forever love and eternal soul.”

“We will carry forward Kusama’s wishes and, through art, continue to bring hope and strength for the future to people around the world.”

I thought I would start to share the process of my piece ‘Ground Colony’ that was selected as a finalist in the Sculptures in the Garden, Mudgee

These little bits of steel are where all started. Before this piece I made the Octopus pictured out of paper pulp and PVA glue. I decided to use the same material for Ground Colony against all advice due to the scale I intended to go. It was a cost factor but I really liked the malleability of the mixture and the end result and feel of it. It is durable and has the properties of wood. It can be sanded and manipulated after it is fully dried and once sealed is fully sustainable outside.

This is step one. The metal was welded with the intention of it being the base for a Pear but the organic way I work means that what I intend to make almost always changes to suit what the materials dictate it becomes to me. Adaptability is my best friend. Every mistake really isn’t one. Wink wink

I just received the news that I am a finalist in the being held in Mudgee for this year in October!

For my piece ‘Ground Colony’

So excited. My first big sculpture and first entry into a Sculpture exhibition!

I will be sharing my process again in the lead up to the exhibition in October!

It was a morning of babies this morning. Some native ducks doing the pilgrimage to the lake. Five seconds after these photos I had to get Ollie to scare off a stupid cat that was stalking these babies. Pretty tense moment but we made sure they got to safety. The little sweethearts had no fear of the dogs. They were charging towards them. Benny was licking his lips thinking yum yum some Peking Duck!
