Play is a child’s language, a bridge for expressing feelings and experiences they may not yet have words for.

Through toys, games, art, and role play, children show us their inner world.
Sometimes it’s direct, other times symbolic - but it all tells us something.
The therapist doesn’t direct or correct, but reflects and responds to help the child feel seen and understood.

✨ “You’re working so hard.”
Over time, children begin to feel:

• Someone understands me
• I can handle hard things

AGGRESSION IN THE PLAYROOM ⚔️🦖

Sometimes, being a child can mean having very little control over your day.

Adults decide what you eat, wear, where you go, when play stops, what you do and how you behave.

For some children, especially children with neurodevelopmental differences, managing all of these expectations can take a lot of energy.

When feelings, frustration and stress build up, they can show up in behaviour. Sometimes, that looks like aggression.

In the playroom, we don't automatically stop the sword fight.

We don't silence the dinosaur's roar.
We don't rush to make the anger disappear.
We lean in.

Rather than viewing these expressions as something that needs to be shut down, therapy allows us to become curious about what the child may be communicating through their play.

Play can create space for children to experience power and control, express big feelings and release some of the stress they've been carrying.

They get to feel strong.
They get to have choices.
They get some of their power back.

And sometimes, when children feel more in control and understood, they can step back into their world feeling a little lighter.

When children care for baby dolls, they're building real-life skills through play. They start noticing the needs of others, and along the way learn something about their own needs too - what helps us feel safe, cared for, comforted and loved.

These moments naturally bring out communication - talking to the baby, describing what's happening, working through little problems, expressing thoughts and feelings.

For children in early intervention, nurture play is a simple but powerful way to support learning while following their interests and having fun.

Try joining in and wondering aloud: "Oh no, baby is crying. I wonder what they might need?"
