Listen Before You Dismiss Patient-led advocacy for safer rural healthcare. Patients heard. Staff supported. Meaningful change. I'm here to help make a difference.**

I'm Nicole King, a disability support worker and community advocate based in Mount Gambier, South Australia. My experience in community care has strengthened my belief that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect. Following my own experiences within the rural healthcare system, I founded **Listen Before You Dismiss**, an independent, patient-led campaign advocating for safer, more compassionate and accountable healthcare. I believe patients, families, carers and healthcare professionals all deserve to be heard and supported. My goal is to bring people together, encourage community involvement and use lived experiences alongside factual, documented evidence to advocate for meaningful, measurable improvements in rural healthcare.

**I'm not here simply to raise awareness.

💙 WHAT DOES ‘MEASURED’ ACTUALLY MEAN?

In healthcare, we measure so many things.

Policies. Targets. Complaints. Surveys. Documentation. Processes.

But there's something that deserves just as much attention.

Did the person receiving care actually feel heard?

Being asked a question isn't always the same as being understood.

Having a concern documented isn't always the same as having it taken seriously.

And being told that improvements are underway isn't the same as knowing whether those improvements are making a difference.

At Listen Before You Dismiss, we're asking for more than promises.

We're asking for communication that patients can trust, safer handovers, respectful care and accountability that leads to meaningful improvements.

Not because healthcare workers don't care.

But because listening, understanding and following through matter.

💙 We'd like to hear from you.

When you raised a concern in hospital, did you feel genuinely heard?

What made the difference — or what was missing?

You can share your thoughts below or message the page privately. Please protect the privacy of patients and healthcare workers when commenting.

WE ASKED FOR THE DATA.
NOW WE’RE ASKING FOR THE RECORDS.
Listen Before You Dismiss asked LCLHN for Mount Gambier-specific patient experience and quality information.
LCLHN advised that the information requested is not routinely published or maintained in one consolidated document or dataset, and directed us to Freedom of Information for access to existing records.
So we followed that pathway.
A targeted FOI application has now been lodged seeking existing records relating to:
• Patient experience
• Complaints and feedback
• Clinical handover
• Discharge information
• Escalation pathways
• Quality improvement
We don’t know what those records will show.
And we won’t pretend we do.
We’ll read the evidence carefully, verify what it supports, and report responsibly on what we find.
Evidence before assumptions.
Accountability through transparency.

Ever left an appointment wondering what something meant?

Medical language can be confusing. Asking for an explanation is okay.

💙 Plain language matters.
💙 Questions deserve time.
💙 Understanding matters.

Good care includes making sure the person receiving it knows what's being explained.

GOOD CARE SHOULDN'T REQUIRE A MEDICAL DICTIONARY.

A patient can hear every word a healthcare professional says and still walk away confused.

Medical language may be familiar to staff. It isn't always familiar to the person receiving care.

Taking time to explain something in plain language, welcome questions and check understanding can make a real difference.

Clear communication is part of respectful, safer care.

CHANGE ISN'T PROVEN BECAUSE A POLICY EXISTS. IT'S PROVEN WHEN PRACTICE CHANGES.

A new policy can be written.
Training can be delivered.
Commitments can be made.

But none of those things, on their own, prove that patients are receiving better care.

The real test is what happens when someone walks through a hospital door.

Are their concerns taken seriously?

Is their physical health assessed without assumptions?

Are changes in their condition recognised and acted upon?

Are they involved in decisions about their care?

And when something goes wrong, is anyone checking whether the response actually prevents it from happening again?

These aren't unreasonable expectations. They are fundamental questions about patient safety, accountability and trust.

Rural healthcare professionals work under significant pressure, and many provide exceptional care every day. They deserve systems that support them to do their jobs well.

Patients deserve those systems too.

Listen Before You Dismiss is calling for an independent review of rural patient-care standards and clinical training, informed by lived experience and backed by clear responsibilities, realistic timeframes and transparent reporting on progress.

Not simply another policy on a shelf.

Not another commitment without a way to measure its impact.

Real improvements that patients, families and healthcare workers can see in practice.

Because a person's safety should never depend on whether promised improvements have made it beyond the paperwork.

WHAT GETS WRITTEN BECOMES THE RECORD.

And that record can follow a patient long after they leave the hospital.

It can influence future care.

It can shape handover.

It can be relied upon during a complaint or review.

And sometimes, months later, it becomes the version of events everyone else is asked to accept.

Recent developments in my own hospital complaint have reminded me just how important accurate clinical documentation is.

In the official notes from a recent meeting about my care, a senior health-service representative said they could only rely on what had been documented in the clinical record.
The same meeting acknowledged that communication around my discharge could have been better.

That sentence matters.

Because when the written record does not fully reflect what a patient was told, what they experienced, what was assessed or what was actually agreed, the patient can end up having to prove their own experience after the fact.

Good documentation is not just paperwork.

It is part of patient safety, continuity of care and accountability.

Patients deserve records that clearly distinguish:

• what was observed
• what was assessed
• what was discussed
• who was consulted
• what was agreed
• and what follow-up was actually arranged

The same meeting also acknowledged there may have been a gap in discharge information when a mental-health patient was being cared for as an outlier on a general ward, with work proposed to make that process more consistent.

That is exactly why systems need to learn from individual experiences instead of dismissing them as isolated complaints.

Listen Before You Dismiss continues to call for strong, accountable rural healthcare systems where patient voice, clinical documentation and what actually happened all belong in the same story.

💙 If you believe patients should be able to trust the record of their own care, please share this.

YOUR POSTCODE SHOULDN’T LOWER THE STANDARD OF CARE.

Living in a rural community can mean longer distances, fewer services and very real workforce pressures.
But those pressures should never become an expectation that rural patients simply accept a lower standard of care.
Good rural healthcare happens every day, often because dedicated people are doing an enormous amount with limited resources. Listen Before You Dismiss is not about denying that.
It is about asking whether regional communities are being supported by systems, standards and training strong enough to deliver safe, respectful and consistent care — wherever someone lives.
We are calling for an independent review of rural patient-care standards and clinical training, with lived experience included in the process.
And that review needs to lead to more than recommendations sitting on a shelf.
It should include: • clear responsibility for action
• realistic timeframes
• transparent reporting on what has actually changed
Because geography can affect how healthcare is delivered.
It should not decide how seriously a patient deserves to be treated.
💙 731 people have now added their support.
Just 269 more will take the petition to its next goal of 1,000 supporters.
If you believe rural patients deserve strong, accountable healthcare standards too, please support the campaign, share this post and add your name.
