I’m yet to meet a kid who doesn’t

I get it, they come on a shiny wrapper, they’re crunchy, texturally delightful and more often than not laden with (3 plus forms of) sugar.

They are also very expensive and upwards of $7/$8 for a pack of 4.

What if I told you they are super easy to make.

All you need is food processor, a base of melted butter and honey (with vanilla and salt) and add that slowly to oats and pumpkin seeds while you process the mix altogether. Add your flavours ie:
💫 chockie, sultanas, orange zest
💫 walnuts, dried apricots, cinnamon
💫 hazelnuts and cocoa
💫 almonds and lemon zest

Press into a firm tin, bake at 160 until golden, leave to cool ( this is where they harden up)

Cut, store and have yourself a cuppa that@you have made a wholesome treat the whole family will enjoy.

I’ll take a packaged snack and raise it 👆

This plate took less than two minutes to pull together and includes colour, crunch, wholegrains, healthy fats, texture, it’s fun to eat and not over in a minute.

Health stars and nutrition claims, don’t automatically make a snack more nutritious than a plate of simple whole foods.

The goal isn’t to make every snack perfect. It’s to find easy ways to add more variety and nutrition without making life harder.

Hey 👋 I’m Cushla, founder of Cushla Cooney | Pregnancy, Baby & Kids Nutritionist qualified nutritionist and mum. I’m all about making good nutrition enjoyable to eat and prepare. Join one of my workshops and follow along for more.

The concern isn’t the ice cream itself.

It’s the machine.

Soft serve machines can be difficult to clean properly and, if food safety standards aren’t followed, bacteria such as listeria can grow inside.

Listeria infection can have serious consequences during pregnancy, hence why soft serve is generally included on the list of foods to avoid.

Like most pregnancy nutrition advice, this isn’t about fear. It’s about reducing risk.

Knowing the reason behind the recommendation makes it a whole lot easier to decide what feels right for you.

Stuck in a spiral of stars, flowers and dinosaurs? 🦖

You don’t have to cut everything up.

I actually think fruit shapes are super fun. If you enjoy making them, keep going.

But don’t underestimate the power of handing over the whole piece of fruit or veg. The whole apple, banana, cucumber, carrot.

For many toddlers, bigger pieces can actually be easier to hold, bite and manage independently.

It also gives them a chance to see what the food really looks like before it’s chopped into tiny pieces and that counts as exposure too.

Toddlers want to do what we do. Holding a whole apple feels a lot more grown up than eating tiny slices from a plate.

And while it can be frustrating when only a tiny few bites are taken, pop them back in the fridge the leftover half apple can become tomorrow’s breakfast topper, banana can be baked into porridge, carrot can be grated and added to muffins.

Sometimes the nutrition win is making life easier for yourself. 💫

Let’s make ice blocks work harder, shall we?

They’re packed with orange, lemon, ginger, turmeric and honey, all blitz up and frozen into a hard working cold and flu season snack.

Ginger contains compounds that may help soothe nausea and support the body’s response to inflammation.

Turmeric contains curcumin, a natural plant compound with anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

One of my favourite ways to turn everyday foods into something that does a little more.

You can even add hot water and extra ginger to create a soothing hot elixir for the husbands with man flu in you life 😉

Enjoy

Real food first. Especially iron rich food.

Most babies do not need a separate food aisle.

Think:
Fruit and veg
Eggs
Slow cooked meats
Fish
Legumes
Tofu /tempeh
Yoghurt
Wholegrains
Herbs and spices

Because when you look closely, a lot of “baby food” is mostly fruit puree with very little iron, flavour or texture exposure.

That doesn’t mean pouches are “bad.” Nutrition is nuanced and that’s okay.

But if you’re asking me where to start?

There’s a lot more nutrition in the supermarket perimeter than the baby aisle.

And yes, this includes allergens too. Eggs, peanuts, dairy, wheat, soy and nuts can all be introduced safely in age appropriate ways as part of normal family foods.

If you want help knowing what to feed your baby, how to safely introduce allergens, what nutrients actually matter and how to start solids with confidence, come along to one of my upcoming workshops.

Make breakfast work harder & smarter 🥄

By adding fibre, you are helping keep little tummies fuller for longer.

Fibre helps slow digestion and that feeling of satisfaction for longer.

And if your child is in their “too busy to sit still” era, this is where packing more nutrition into each bite helps.

In these piklets:
👉Butter beans replace the flour, adding fibre and iron
👉Pairing with yoghurt adds protein
👉Kiwi adds vitamin C to help with the absorption of iron and a bonus fibre hit

An easy way to boost a fun brekky with minimal effort. Plus these can double as a lunchbox addition.

Learn even more easy ways to boost your family’s nutrition by booking one of my workshops.

Marketing is clever.

“No sugar” sounds healthy, so we start viewing foods differently. Especially when they come with claims like gut health, high protein or natural ingredients.

And yes, some options are better than others.

But “better” does not automatically mean everyday food.

A lolly with no sugar is still a lolly. You do not need to turn it into a health food to justify eating it either.

If it’s for joy sometimes, amazing. That is enough.

Instead of obsessing over what foods leave out, focus more on what foods add in.

More fibre.
More iron.
More fruit and veg.
More foods that actually nourish your kids.
