A new 2026 review in Sleep and Biological Rhythms looked at 55 studies and found something worth sitting with: the electromagnetic environment we live in can measurably interfere with the body's internal clock, affecting melatonin production and the cellular signals that regulate circadian rhythm.
It's not the whole story on its own, researchers are still working out exactly how much this matters day to day. But it adds to something scientists have suspected for decades: the modern electromagnetic environment isn't neutral. It's part of why so many of us still feel awake long after we've turned the lights off.
