🌏 Small actions can make a big difference this World Environment Day

When we all work together, the little things make a real difference!

Why not start with a few simple energy-saving habits at home?
💡 Switch off devices on standby
💡 Set your heating between 18–20 degrees
💡 Only run your dishwasher and washing machine with full loads

Want more personalised tips for your household? Midlas’ Energy Coaches can visit your home and provide tailored advice to help improve your energy efficiency and reduce costs ⚡

As a bonus, if you register for an in-home audit, your Energy Coach will bring along a complimentary energy efficient item. A heated throw rug would do wonders this winter! 🥶

Today is Mabo Day, the anniversary of the High Court of Australia overturning the legal fiction of terra nullius, or 'land belonging to no one'. British colonisers relied on terra nullius to claim Australia as their own, even though Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had occupied Australia for at least 50,000 years.

Eddie Koiki Mabo (c. 29 June 1936—21 January 1992), of the Meriam people, was the lead plaintiff in the case before the High Court. The plaintiffs argued that the Meriam people were entitled to property rights on Murray Island—one of their traditional lands, which had been annexed to Queensland—based on their continued observance of traditional laws and customs.

The High Court agreed with the plaintiffs. It held that terra nullius did not apply to Australia at the time of British colonisation. It further held that the Meriam people had native title over Murray Island which was sourced in their traditional laws and customs.

The bravery of Eddie Mabo means that we can now proudly declare that 'terra nullius is dead and gone'.

1 June is the Global Day of Parents. This is your reminder to check in with your parent, parental figure, or caregiver and let them know how much you appreciate them ❤️

This Parents' Day we honour every kind of parent - the new, the seasoned, the hopeful, the grieving, the blended, the chosen, the far‑from‑home, and the ones doing their best in quiet ways.

Don't forget to check in with the parents in your world today, and any day 💛

🏳️‍🌈 June is Pride Month — a time to recognise and celebrate the courage, diversity and resilience of LGBTQIA+ communities.

Pride has its roots in protest. In June 1969, members of the LGBTQIA+ community resisted discrimination and police harassment during the Stonewall Uprising, an event that ignited a worldwide movement for equality and human rights that continues to this day.

At Midlas, we believe that everyone deserves access to justice. This Pride Month, we proudly stand alongside the LGBTQIA+ community and reaffirm our commitment to delivering inclusive, respectful and accessible services 🌈
