You might often hear people talk about 'high quality protein,' High quality protein refers to a protein source that provides all the amino acids your body needs and is easy for your body to break down and absorb.
It's important to include high quality protein in your diet because not getting enough can compromise your body’s ability to grow, repair and maintain our body tissues.
Protein comes from both animal and plant-based foods, but the amount and quality can vary. High quality protein is also known as complete protein, and it is found in foods such as;
- Poultry
- Lean meats
- Eggs
- Milk, yoghurt, and cheese
- Fish
- Soy
Plant based protein can also meet our bodies nutritional needs, however, they do not provide a significant amount of essential amino acids and are less easily broken down and absorbed by the body. Therefore, a variety of plant proteins often in large amounts is needed to ensure that the needs for essential amino acids are met. Plant based protein food sources include;
- Beans
- Quinoa
- Nuts & seeds .
Overall, having a balanced healthy diet with both plant and animal sources of protein will ensure you meet your protein needs to support a healthy and active lifestyle. Our bodies use protein throughout the day so it's important to spread your protein intake in moderate amounts across the day, incorporating it into each meal and snack.
