Research meets real life in the classroom!

Dr. Sharon Perrella and Prof. Donna Geddes led two lactation workshops for UWA’s 3rd-year Human Reproduction students, diving deep into the anatomy and physiology of milk production.

A huge thank you to our special guest families from Western Family Practice, Sally & baby Rory and Lauren & baby Jack, for sharing their real-life experiences and giving the students an invaluable practical perspective!

Did you know that if a breastfeeding mother or her baby gets sick, the breast milk automatically boosts its immune cell concentration to fight the specific infection?

Breast milk provides remarkable, individualised protection for your baby.

Whether you are dealing with a common cold, gastroenteritis, mastitis or another condition, your body recognises this and increases leukocytes in the breast milk to help. This incredible function reduces the severity of your baby’s illness. If you or your baby get sick, keep breastfeeding!

Hospital-grade electric pumps offer the most comfortable and efficient milk removal for early weeks or frequent pumping. For your convenience, hospital-grade pumps are available for hire directly from Western Family Practice.

When starting out, we recommend waiting several weeks before routine pumping so your milk supply can stabilise. It is also best to avoid silicone catchers early on, as the constant vacuum can interfere with baby positioning while establishing breastfeeding. Ultimately, match the pump to your lifestyle. A simple manual pump works well for occasional outings, while a quality electric pump suits frequent daily use.

Breastfeeding is a learned skill that takes time. Most parents and babies need 4 to 6 weeks to adjust and feel confident. In those early weeks, focus on rest and recovery. We generally recommend waiting about 4 weeks for your milk supply to stabilise before introducing regular pumping.

However, early pumping can be helpful if you are dealing with:

🤱 Sore or damaged ni***es (to give yourself a temporary break)
🤱 Latch issues, jaundice, or an early birth
🤱 Delayed milk supply (after day 3)

Direct feeding is usually the easiest path, but if pain or supply challenges come up, a hospital-grade pump can offer efficient support. These can be hired from Western Family Practice.
