🏠Making the Most of Simple Moments at Home
School holidays don’t have to be filled with activities, outings and a packed schedule.
Some of the richest opportunities for communication happen in the quiet moments at home.
💛 Building a cubby from couch cushions.
💛 Baking together and talking through the recipe.
💛 Playing a board game and taking turns.
💛 Reading the same book over and over.
💛 Drawing, creating, pretending and imagining.
💛 Helping with everyday jobs like folding washing or watering the garden.
These moments naturally support:
✨ Conversation and back-and-forth interactions.
✨ New vocabulary.
✨ Listening and following directions.
✨ Problem-solving.
✨ Storytelling and imagination.
✨ Social skills like turn-taking, negotiating and flexibility.
✨ Confidence to communicate without pressure.
Children don’t need to be entertained every minute. They need time to explore, connect, get bored, create and simply be with the people who matter most.
Sometimes the best speech and language opportunities aren’t found in another activity on the calendar, they’re found sitting on the lounge room floor together.
What simple at-home activity does your child love most during the school holidays? We’d love to hear in the comments. 🍂
