Sometimes changing the game has nothing to do with winning.

Dylan Alcott’s impact goes far beyond medals.

Sport gave him confidence, community and a platform — and he used that platform to push for better visibility, access and opportunity for people with disability.

Because when you see someone like you competing, leading and taking up space, the question can change from:

“Can I do that?”

to:

“Why not me?”

People are comfortable with advocates.

Until they start saying things people don’t want to hear.

Australia celebrated Grace Tame when she challenged laws that silenced survivors. Her advocacy helped change legislation, sparked national conversations and earned her Australian of the Year.

But Grace never promised to only use her voice when it was comfortable.

As she became more outspoken, the applause became more complicated.

Some see her as fearless.

Others see her as divisive.

But maybe the bigger question is:

Do we only celebrate outspoken people while we agree with them?

Grace is autistic. A survivor. An advocate.

But she is also allowed to be controversial, challenging, imperfect and disagreed with.

Because inclusion isn’t just making space for people when their story makes us feel good.

It’s making space for their voice when it doesn’t.

Major changes to the NDIS are coming and they could affect hundreds of thousands of participants.

Following more than 4,000 submissions and significant concern from the disability community, amendments have been made to the legislation. But questions remain about reassessments, eligibility and what support will look like outside the NDIS.

The NDIS Bill is NOT being voted on today.
Today is the Senate committee’s final report. Not a vote. The Senate isn’t even sitting.
The realistic window for a vote is next week, 17 to 20 August. The PM has said he expects it
to pass this fortnight.
We don’t support these changes. But we’re not going to add to the panic with wrong dates
either. Here’s the truth:
Nothing changes for your plan today. Or tomorrow. Not until the law passes, and then mostly
at plan renewal.
More than 4,000 people and organisations made submissions. The Human Rights
Commission asked for a pause. That opposition is real, and it deserves better than
confusion.

At 2 pm on Monday, 27 July, the national AusAlert test will sound on compatible devices across Victoria, even if they are on silent or do not disturb.

For people with disability, sensory sensitivities or hidden safety phones, preparation matters. At AAC, looking after our people means thinking ahead, starting the conversation and planning for each person’s individual safety.
