De Qi is the unique sensation often experienced during acupuncture when Qi is activated and begins to move along a channel. Patients may describe it as heaviness, warmth, tingling, aching, pressure, or a travelling sensation along the meridian pathway. While not always felt, De Qi is considered an important therapeutic response in traditional acupuncture.

This illustration demonstrates a classic De Qi sensation travelling along the Heart Meridian from Heart 3 (Shaohai) toward Heart 9 (Shaochong). Patients may describe this movement as a wave of warmth, tingling, heaviness, pressure, or an electrical-like sensation moving along the pathway. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, De Qi is often regarded as a sign that Qi has been activated and is flowing through the channel.

✨ What is De Qi? One of the most important sensations experienced during acupuncture is called ‘De Qi’ (pronounced "duh chee"). Often described as a feeling of heaviness, dull ache, warmth, tingling, pressure, or a gentle spreading sensation around the needle, De Qi is considered a positive and normal response that indicates the body's Qi has been engaged.
Not everyone experiences De Qi in the same way, and some people may feel it more strongly than others. In most cases, it is comfortable and short-lived, signalling that the acupuncture treatment is working with your body's natural healing processes.
