Swings can provide a surprising number of mental health and emotional regulation benefits for both children and adults, particularly for people with autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma histories, or sensory processing differences.

Emotional Regulation:
* The rhythmic back-and-forth movement can be calming and soothing.
* Helps reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm.
* Can assist people in regulating strong emotions such as frustration, anger, or sadness.

Sensory Benefits:
* Swinging stimulates the vestibular system (the body’s balance and movement system).
* Improves body awareness and spatial awareness.
* Can help people who seek movement to feel more regulated and focused.

Reduced Anxiety and Stress:
* Repetitive motion can have a similar calming effect to rocking.
* Encourages relaxation and can lower feelings of tension.
* Provides a safe activity for self-soothing during difficult moments.

Mood Enhancement:
* Physical movement releases endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals.
* Time outdoors while swinging may increase exposure to sunlight and fresh air, both linked to improved mood.
* Creates opportunities for joy, play, and laughter.

Benefits for Children with Autism

* Helps regulate sensory input.
* Can reduce stimming driven by sensory seeking needs.
* Provides a predictable, repetitive movement that many autistic children find calming and enjoyable.
* May improve readiness for learning and participation in other activities.

Benefits for Adults
* Can act as a mindfulness activity, helping you focus on the present moment.
* Provides a simple way to decompress after a stressful day.
* Encourages playful experiences, which are often overlooked but important for mental wellbeing.

🦆💙 Feeding wild birds can be more than just a fun outdoor activity — for many individuals living with Neurodivergent Disorder’s, it can provide meaningful therapeutic and emotional benefits.

The calming sounds of nature, repetitive movements of feeding, and gentle interaction with animals can help reduce stress and anxiety while encouraging mindfulness and emotional regulation. Watching birds gather and respond can also support focus, patience, and sensory engagement in a peaceful environment.

Outdoor activities like this can help build:
✨ Confidence and independence
✨ Social interaction and communication
✨ Fine motor skills and coordination
✨ Emotional connection with nature
✨ Routine, calmness, and relaxation

For many people living with this disorder, nature-based supports create a safe and enjoyable way to connect with the world around them — without pressure or overstimulation.

Sometimes the smallest moments, like sharing bird seed by the water, can create the biggest smiles. 💜🩵

Reading the news regarding Jai Arrows diagnosis, I wanted to take a moment to help YOU understand MND a little.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerves responsible for sending messages from the brain to the muscles. Over time, these nerves stop working, causing muscles to weaken, stiffen, and waste away.

MND can affect:
• Walking and mobility
• Speaking and communication
• Swallowing and eating
• Breathing
• Everyday independence

Despite the physical impacts, many people living with MND remain mentally aware and emotionally connected throughout their journey.

There is currently no cure for MND, but support, therapies, equipment, and compassionate care can make a significant difference to quality of life.

💡 Signs and Symptoms May Include:
• Muscle weakness or cramps
• Difficulty gripping items
• Slurred speech
• Trouble swallowing
• Fatigue
• Changes in mobility or balance
• Breathing difficulties as the condition progresses

Every person’s journey with MND is different. Some people experience slow progression, while others may decline more rapidly.

💜 Why Awareness Matters
Living with MND can be emotionally, physically, and financially overwhelming — not only for the person diagnosed, but also for their families, carers, and support networks.

Awareness helps:
✔ Reduce stigma and misunderstanding
✔ Encourage early support and intervention
✔ Promote accessibility and inclusion
✔ Support research efforts
✔ Remind families they are not alone

As support workers and community members, kindness, patience, and understanding can make an enormous difference.

✨ Ways You Can Support Someone Living With MND:
• Be patient with communication
• Offer practical help without taking away independence
• Educate yourself about the condition
• Include them socially and emotionally
• Support carers and family members too
• Advocate for accessible and inclusive communities

At Positive Approach Support Services, we believe everyone deserves dignity, compassion, understanding, and support tailored to their individual needs.

💙 MND does not define a person.
Their strength, personality, memories, humour, and value remain. 💙

Some Famous MND battlers:
- Stephen Hawking
- Eric Dane
- Ezzard Charles
- Lou Gehrig
- Fiona MacDonald
- Carl Webb
- Pro Hart

Just to name a few!!!

And did you know, the TikTok trend “The Ice Bucket Challenge” was developed to raise money and awareness for MND and associated illnesses?
