Next Emmett Technique 4 Horses Workshop in Victoria will be in Benalla!! 29 November 2026.

A freer rider and a happier horse start with gentle, in-the-moment care 🐴

Equine bodies carry tension just like humans do. When a horse holds restriction in the shoulder or hindquarters, it can directly affect their stride length, head carriage, and willingness to move.

The EMMETT 4 Horses Workshop introduces horse owners to gentle releases that:
🔵 Ease muscle tightness - support fluid, unrestricted movement in the paddock or arena.
🟡 Improve partnership - build trust with your horse using a non-invasive, gentle touch.
🔵 Provide real-time feedback - learn to observe soft tissue changes through your horse's breathing and movement.

No prior bodywork experience is required to learn these introductory skills.

Thanks Emmett Technique International for promoting me. If you would like to find out how I can assist you and your horse, please contact me for a treatment.

This week’s tutor tip comes from Jo Martin, an EMMETT Tutor and Equine Assisted Learning Practitioner at JEM - Muscle Release Therapy on the Mornington Peninsula. This tip is for equine therapists, riding instructors, and horse owners looking to improve ridden harmony and movement.

With a long background in sports instruction, Pony Club teaching, and equine-assisted therapy, Jo uses EMMETT to address physical restrictions right where they happen - whether in the clinic, out in the paddock, or in the riding arena.

🟡 Don't wait until after a ride to address restriction. Delivering light touch releases before and during a mounted session allows you to adapt to the body in real time, using feedback from both horse and human to guide where treatment is required.
🔵 Riders report an immediate feeling of looser, freer movement, while the horse gives instant feedback through relaxed breathing and fluid movement - resulting in a stronger, happier partnership for the whole team.

I love that I have learnt the Emmett Technique to initially help my horses and my family and now offer it to others. Please contact me if you and/or your horse would like to find out more.

Today, the spotlight is on Jo Martin, an EMMETT Tutor for 18 months operating JEM - Muscle Release Therapy on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. Jo applies the chameleon approach across both human and equine streams to support total mobility and freedom of movement 🐴

Jo’s journey with horses started in her youth at Pony Club, leading to years of instructing across various sports before returning to Pony Club with her daughter in 2004. Over six years ago, Jo expanded her passion by becoming an Equine Assisted Learning Practitioner, assisting clients alongside horses to improve their daily living. Integrating EMMETT into these sessions has transformed how both horse and rider move together.

Now, as a dual-stream Practitioner and EMMETT 4 Horses Workshop Tutor, Jo travels across Victoria and beyond to introduce people to these gentle releases ✨

In her practice, Jo witnesses the power of real-time adjustments:
🔵 Mounted balance - delivering releases before and during mounted sessions so clients immediately feel freer and looser in their movement.
🟡 Dual feedback - watching the horse respond through deeper breathing and softer movement as the client’s physical restrictions clear.
🔵 Immediate relief - observing clear equine pain points react during assessment, then soften completely after gentle EMMETT application.

I am an Emmett Technique Practitioner (Horses and Humans) and Tutor for Horses. I am running a workshop next Saturday in Moorooduc. Emmett Technique is a gentle muscle release therapy using light pressure at specific points. This gentle and safe muscle release technique may increase movement and improve balance for your animal. In this workshop you will learn four horse moves and two human moves. What I love about this technique is that there is no prior learning required, and it is easy to make positive changes for your animal.
Please contact me if you would like to attend.

It’s a common misconception, however the EMMETT Technique is NOT massage! 🙅‍♀️

While both can leave you feeling relaxed, they work in very different ways and can complement one another.

The EMMETT Technique is a unique neuromuscular release method which, unlike massage that involves long, kneading strokes to manipulate tissue, uses light finger pressure on specific critical points.

These points act as switches, sending an immediate signal to the brain via the nervous system to:
🔹 Release muscle tension
🔹 Improve range of motion
🔹 Reset muscle memory

It’s fast gentle, and can even be performed through clothing!
