🇯🇵 JAPAN: WHERE KAMI, FOLKLORE AND STORY MEET

Our Myth Across Cultures journey continues through Japan—exploring sacred traditions, legendary beings and stories that have inspired generations.

Guided by Mei, this series encounters Amaterasu and the Cave of Heaven, Izanagi and Izanami, Susanoo and Yamata no Orochi, the moon princess Kaguya-hime and beloved characters such as Momotarō and Urashima Tarō.

We also enter the fascinating world of yōkai—from playful tanuki and mysterious kitsune to mountain tengu, the haunting Yuki-onna and Namazu, the legendary earthquake catfish.

Some stories entertain. Some warn. Some explore courage, kindness, gratitude, promises and our relationship with the natural world.

The series also introduces kami with care and respect. Kami belong to Shinto, a living religious tradition—not simply a collection of fantasy characters. Their significance cannot be reduced to a single definition or represented by one image.

Japan’s old stories continue to evolve through festivals, theatre, visual art, manga, film and everyday culture. They remind us that stories do more than explain the past—they travel, transform and help each generation consider what it values.

Which Japanese story or figure would you like to explore further?

🪨🇯🇵 JŌMON STONE CIRCLES
Ancient Japan Arranged in Stone

Across northern Japan, ancient circles of carefully positioned stones offer an extraordinary glimpse into the complex world of the Jōmon people.

These were settled hunter-fisher-gatherer communities with sophisticated knowledge of their landscapes, seasons and natural resources. They created pottery, built enduring settlements and gathered in places that may have held ceremonial, spiritual and commemorative significance.

From Ōyu’s circles within circles to Komakino’s carefully prepared hillside and the 1,200 stones of Ōmori Katsuyama, each place is distinctive.

At Ōmori Katsuyama, the winter-solstice sun sets behind Mount Iwaki—bringing stone, mountain and season together in one remarkable landscape.

Archaeology provides evidence of community, ritual and remembrance, but it cannot answer every question.

What did these circles mean?
Who gathered there?
What knowledge was shared?
What stories remain within the stones?

Guided by Mei, this series explores the ingenuity and complexity of Jōmon culture while carefully separating archaeological evidence from interpretation.

Now recognised as part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jōmon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan, these extraordinary places are being protected for future generations.

Placed by hand. Remembered in stone.

💜🌿 WHEN THE HILLS TURN PURPLE

Something extraordinary is happening in the hills around Munnar, Kerala.

Neelakurinji flowers are blooming across parts of the landscape, transforming green mountainsides into remarkable shades of blue and purple. Recent reports confirm significant flowering around Munnar during August 2026.

Neelakurinji is famous for its unusual flowering cycles. Strobilanthes kunthiana, the species behind Munnar’s celebrated mass displays, flowers on an approximately 12-year cycle, growing within the precious shola-grassland ecosystems of the Western Ghats.

But this is more than a beautiful photograph.

🌱 It reminds us that nature works on its own timetable.
🐝 Flowering supports pollinators and the wider ecosystem.
🌏 The Western Ghats are home to extraordinary biodiversity found nowhere else.
💜 And some natural wonders require years — even decades — of protection before we have the privilege of witnessing them.

There is also an important lesson for visitors: admire, photograph and protect. Forest authorities specifically ask people not to pick, damage or trample the flowers.

At Your Hart 2 Hart, our Green Pathways remind us that connecting with nature also means taking responsibility for protecting it.

Because sometimes conservation means protecting something today so that someone else can stand on a purple hillside years from now. 💜🌿

🌅🤖 WHAT KIND OF FUTURE ARE WE BUILDING?

AI will become more capable.

It will become more autonomous.

It will increasingly shape how we work, learn, communicate, create and care for one another.

But perhaps the biggest question isn’t what AI will become.

It’s what we choose to become alongside it.

The systems we build today will carry traces of our priorities — what we reward, what we protect, whose voices we include and what boundaries we decide matter.

Do we build AI primarily for efficiency?

Or can we build it for human flourishing too?

💛 Technology that strengthens human connection.
🌏 Innovation that respects our planet.
♿ Systems designed with inclusion from the beginning.
🧑‍⚕️ AI that supports people doing essential work.
🛡️ Progress that protects dignity, privacy and choice.
🤖 And increasingly capable machines developed with wisdom and responsibility.

AI isn’t arriving in a future somebody else will create.

We are creating that future now.

And perhaps getting AI right begins with remembering something wonderfully simple:

The future isn’t just about what we can build.
It’s about what is worth building. 💛

Soulful AI™
Human-led. Enhanced by additional intelligence.

🧠🌿 WHAT IF WE LISTENED TO MORE THAN ONE WAY OF UNDERSTANDING THE MIND?

Language doesn’t simply describe our experiences. It can shape how we understand them.

I recently came across a discussion exploring Māori perspectives and terminology around ADHD and autism, and it raised an important point.

Different cultures have developed their own ways of understanding people, identity, behaviour, connection and wellbeing — often long before modern diagnostic terminology existed.

For organisations working across psychology, occupational therapy and disability support, that matters.

Clinical knowledge is important. Evidence-based practice is important.

But so are culture, language, lived experience and the way a person understands themselves.

As our communities become increasingly multicultural, culturally responsive practice shouldn’t mean simply translating Western terminology into another language. It means being curious enough to ask:

🌿 How does this culture understand difference?
🌿 What language does the person themselves prefer?
🌿 What can traditional knowledge teach us about belonging and wellbeing?
🌿 How can clinical practice respect both evidence and cultural identity?

Perhaps the future of truly person-centred care isn’t about finding one universal language for the human experience.

Perhaps it’s about becoming better at listening to many different languages of being human.

❤️ Thank you to WTF Is ADHD Podcast for starting such an interesting conversation.

🌸🌿 MISS LILLI PILLI’S FLOWER OF THE WEEK — FLANNEL FLOWER 🌿🌸

Miss Lilli Pilli has found a flower that feels almost as lovely as it looks. 🤍

Meet the Flannel Flower (Actinotus helianthi), a beautiful Australian native famous for its soft, woolly feel.

And here’s a little botanical surprise: those gorgeous white, petal-like parts aren’t actually petals! They are bracts surrounding clusters of tiny flowers in the centre. 🌼

The fine hairs covering the plant give it that wonderfully soft, flannel-like texture — and its name.

Flannel Flowers grow naturally along parts of Australia’s east coast, often appearing among sandstone bushland and putting on spectacular displays when conditions are just right.

And this little native has recently had a BIG moment…

🏆 The Flannel Flower was crowned Australia’s Most Amazing Wildflower in ABC Radio National’s National Science Week celebration!

Miss Lilli Pilli thinks that deserves a very enthusiastic round of applause. 👏🌸

Soft as flannel. Strong in nature. Unmistakably Australian. 🇦🇺

🌿 Take only photographs.
🌸 Leave wildflowers where they grow.
💚 Protect the little things that make our bush extraordinary.
