📱😵💫 The “Heads-Down Generation” Is Real
Teenagers today are spending more time than ever on phones, gaming systems, tablets, and social media — and research is showing it’s taking a serious toll on spinal health, posture, sleep, and wellbeing.
A major 2024 study of over 9,000 teenagers found prolonged screen time was strongly linked to:
⚠️ Neck & shoulder pain
⚠️ Back pain
⚠️ Headaches
⚠️ Eye strain
⚠️ Dizziness
⚠️ Sleep difficulties
Some teens reported spending 6+ hours PER DAY on screens.
One of the biggest concerns?
📍 “Tech Neck”
Looking down at phones for long periods dramatically increases stress on the neck and upper back. Over time this may contribute to:
❌ Forward head posture
❌ Rounded shoulders
❌ Muscle tension
❌ Headaches
❌ Reduced spinal mobility
❌ Poor posture habits
Researchers found social media use had the strongest association with physical symptoms — even more than TV watching or gaming.
💤 Sleep was also heavily affected:
Over 34% of adolescents reported recurrent sleep problems, with blue light exposure and prolonged screen use disrupting normal sleep cycles.
At HealthWise Chiropractic Sunbury & Melton, we’re increasingly seeing teenagers with posture-related pain, headaches, muscle tension, and screen-related spinal stress.
✅ Tips to reduce “Tech Neck”:
• Raise screens closer to eye level
• Take movement breaks every 30–45 mins
• Encourage physical activity
• Limit screen time before bed
• Strengthen posture muscles
• Reduce long periods of continuous scrolling
