Coherence doesn't require sameness.
You can change your mind, your direction, your expression and even what you believe — and still be deeply grounded in who you are.
I think we sometimes misunderstand authenticity as consistency.
As though once we've discovered who we are, we're supposed to remain recognisable as that person forever.
To want the same things.
Believe the same things. Follow the same path.
But perhaps authenticity isn't about remaining the same.
Perhaps it's about remaining in relationship with ourselves as we change.
Because life will change us.
Some experiences we choose. Others arrive without our invitation.
We learn. We encounter people and perspectives that expand our understanding.
We experience love, loss, joy, grief, endings, beginnings and possibility.
We discover parts of ourselves we hadn't met yet.
And sometimes what once felt completely true... no longer does.
That doesn't make the person we were before inauthentic.
Both can be true.
Who you were then can have been completely real.
And who you are now can be completely real too.
Perhaps coherence isn't found in making every version of ourselves match.
Perhaps it's found in continuing to listen closely enough to recognise what is true now.
To honour what still belongs.
To release what doesn't.
To remain curious about what is emerging.
🪷 Something to Consider
Where are you asking yourself to remain consistent simply because changing might make you difficult to explain?
What if changing your mind didn't mean you'd been wrong?
What if a new direction didn't invalidate the road that brought you here?
What if you could honour who you've been without needing to decide who you're allowed to become?
You don't need every version of yourself to look the same for them all to belong to you.
Perhaps that's one of the deeper freedoms of belonging to yourself:
You can remain grounded in who you are while allowing yourself to keep becoming.
Big love,
Kerryn 🤍
