Bloating is information, not a verdict.

It is not proof that you have done something wrong, and it is not proof that your body is broken.
It is a signal telling you something about how your digestion is running right now.

Most women arrive at me having spent two years treating the signal as a personal failing. That is exhausting, and it is not useful.

Ask a better question.
Not what have I done wrong, but what is my gut asking for that it is not getting.

Sunday, honestly

For years I thought bloating was just me 😫

Just something my body did. Just what happens. Just the price of a busy life, or getting older, or eating like a normal person.

I never mentioned it to anyone. I certainly never thought it was worth a professional conversation.

I just bought looser clothes and got on with it.
What I know now: "common" and "nothing can be done" are two completely different statements, and an enormous number of women are quietly living in the gap between them.

You're allowed to want to feel comfortable in your own body.
That's not vanity, and it certainly isn't a fuss about nothing. 🌿

"I wasn't hungry at 11am for the first time in years".

A small win that isn't small (details changed). 🌿

A woman came to me exhausted, grazing all afternoon, and completely convinced she had no willpower. She'd been eating a banana or nothing at all for breakfast for about a decade.

We changed almost nothing dramatic.
We added protein to breakfast.
Eggs some days, Greek yoghurt others. That was the first step.

Three weeks later, the thing she reported wasn't weight or bloating.
It was this: "I wasn't hungry at 11am for the first time in years."

The 3pm crash faded. The evening grazing quietened.
Not because she found discipline, but because she stopped starting each day in a fuel deficit.

It was never willpower. It was breakfast. 💚

Did your digestion change in your 40s?

Genuine question, and the replies to this one always surprise women. 🌿

Did your digestion change somewhere in your 40s?
Not dramatically, necessarily. Just... differently 🤔

Foods that were fine became not-quite-fine. Bloating arrived without an obvious cause. Things became less predictable.

So many women assume this is unique to them, or a sign something's wrong, or simply what getting older means, and they say nothing.

It's more common than you'd think, and there are real physiological reasons for it. Oestrogen influences your gut environment, so as it fluctuates, digestion often follows.

Did this happen to you?

Tell me below, if only so the next woman reading knows she isn't the only one. 💚

Apparently walking without a podcast, a playlist or a phone in your hand is now a viral wellness trend called “silent walking”.

Audrey and I have been doing it for years.
We just called it walking 😬🤣

To be fair though, there’s something in it.
Getting outside, moving gently and giving your nervous system a break from constant input is genuinely useful in midlife, especially when you’re already running on stress and broken sleep.

Regular walking is associated with better blood sugar regulation especially after a meal, digestion and mood, and it doesn’t cost anything or require a subscription.

But you don’t need a trend name, an app, or a “protocol”. You just need to put your shoes on 💚

Not another diet. Not another wellness trend. Just what actually works for your body now.

Morning light. Outside. Ideally within an hour or so of waking, before you check your phone.

Here’s why it matters more in midlife: light hitting your eyes in the morning is the main signal your body clock uses to set itself for the day. That timing signal influences when you feel alert, when cortisol peaks, when melatonin rises at night, and how well you sleep. Sleep in perimenopause is often already disrupted, so anything that strengthens that signal is worth having.

Ten minutes outside in the morning does more for your body clock than an hour under indoor lighting, because outdoor light is many times brighter than what’s in your kitchen, even on an overcast Sunshine Coast morning.

Better light in the morning may support better sleep at night. Better sleep supports appetite regulation, mood and the motivation to actually do the things you planned. It’s all one system.

You don’t need a supplement for this one. You need the back door. 💚

Nothing works anymore 😡

A woman said to me recently, "everything that used to work stopped working".

I knew exactly what she meant, because that was me at 47.

Same food, same effort, same habits that had carried me through for twenty years.
The suddenly bloated by mid-afternoon, flat by 3pm, and a body that felt it belonged to someone else .

For goodness sake I know what I'm doing, I have a degree in nutrition but that didn't exempt me from any of it.

Here's what I wish someone had told then, it's not a willpower problem.

In perimenopause your oestrogen shifts, and your gut, your muscle mass and your blood sugar response shift with it.
The strategy that worked at 35 was built for a different body.

What changed things for me wasn't cutting more out.
It was adding protein and fibre back in, actually eating enough, and supporting my nervous system instead of flogging it.

If your body's stopped making sense this year, you're not doing it wrong.
You just need different information than the information you've got 💚.

MYTH: Protein is just for gym junkies 💪

REALITY: Protein matters MORE as we age, not less.

From midlife onwards, we gradually become less efficient at using dietary protein to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
Add menopause related changes, reduced activity for some women, and the natural loss of muscles that comes with ageing, and getting enough protein becomes increasingly important.

And this isn't about bodybuilding 🏋️

Protein helps support:

🌿muscle mass and strength
🌿bone health
🌿recovery and repair
🌿feeling satisfied after meals
🌿maintaining function and independence as we get older

You don't need enormous steaks or a protein shake glued to your hand either.

For most women, it's far more useful to think about including meaningful sources of protein at each meal rather than trying to cram it all in at dinner.

Think Greek yoghurt, eggs, fish, chicken, tofu, legumes, cottage cheese, milk, nuts and seeds... whatever works for YOU.

Because eating enough protein in midlife isn't gym culture.

Its ageing well 💚

Sunday, honestly 💚

Something I don't say often enough. 💚

I spent years of my own life quietly at war with food. Counting, cutting, starting again on Mondays.

Not because I was vain, but because I'd absorbed the idea that discipline was the answer to everything and that hunger was a character test.

It didn't make me healthier.
It made me tired, obsessive, and pretty miserable company.

What changed things wasn't a better diet.
It was giving up the idea that there was a diet.

So when I say "science, not shame", it isn't a slogan I picked because it rhymes.
It's the thing I wish someone had said to me twenty years ago, and it's the reason I'll never hand you a list of foods to fear. 🌿
