Powerlessness isn’t always so obvious.
There have been so many times I've given power away to circumstances without even realising I'm doing it. And it's kept me stuck.

🫠It'll be easier when the kids are a bit older.
🫠I'll have time to focus on my health when life is less crazy.
🫠When things aren't so expensive then I can start saving.
🫠I'll feel successful once the right opportunity comes along.

I'm not denying there is lots of factors in our life we get no say in. But there are often so many choices we normally don't realise we're making, or completely ignore.

Explore this with me deeper in this weeks article, "How you're keeping the story alive", part 2 of my Rewriting Your Story series on Substack. Find the link to read in my bio.

We ofen think of power as something we have, or we don’t. Like we’re either in the driver’s seat, controlling the tunes and knowing exactly where we’re headed. Or we’re a “passenger princess”, at the mercy of a driver who ignores the speed limit, misses the turn, and has a terrible taste in music.

However, powerlessness isn’t always that obvious. I’ve spent a long time, and a lot of money, on learning, healing and understanding what makes me, me. And yet, I still find myself stuck, particularly when it comes to contributing financially to my family in a way that actually feels fulfilling and worth my energy. It’s really kept me in this state of limbo for so many years, like I was waiting for something to just click.

That was until a few months ago, when I undertook what I thought was going to be a pretty straightforward reflective exercise. But what I uncovered left me truly humbled. It asked,

Where in my life do I still feel powerless? Where am I blaming people, circumstances or timing for how my life is right now?

And my fingers couldn’t type fast enough! I blamed people for lulling me into believing teaching was the career for me (and how I’d wasted all those years studying and wracking up debt for nothing). I blamed the education system for being so backwards and expecting too much from teachers. I blamed the cost of living and COVID for my sewing business not being sustainable. I blamed having been out of the workforce to raise my family leaving me out of touch and behind in my career and capacity to financially contribute.

There were so many things I didn’t realise I was harbouring inside. The people, circumstances and timing that I’d been giving my power away to. Then the next question halted me.

What part of this experience might I be creating unconsciously?

I’ve spent the last few years really diving into understanding myself more. Learning why I react the way I do, what triggers me, and revealing some pretty uncomfortable patterns of behaviour. But the crossroad I’ve approached recently, is really questioning how much longer I’m going to let what happened in the past determine how I live now?

It’s a particularly prominent pattern in my relationship around this time of year. Because in September 2022, my marriage was on the rocks, and life was filled with so much uncertainty and pain. What I’ve noticed is that while so much has changed (for the better) since then, I can still sometimes feel that version of me rush back. I feel myself getting anxious, overthinking, and clingy as though some part of me is still protecting me from what happened back then. The reality is, none of that is required for right now in 2026, but somewhere inside, there’s this voice that remembers and says don’t let your guard down.

Once I noticed it in my relationship, I started noticing it in other areas of life too. I knew how constantly moving around as a child created a deep story around instability and belonging. But then I noticed how I’ve also spent years continuing to identify with those stories, as though that experience as a child still needed to define who I am today.

And don’t get me started on my career. For years now I’ve felt like I’m in this weird in-between stage where I’m studying, trying things and changing my mind. But the more I continued figuring things out, the more I started believing I was simply a person who didn’t know what she was doing with her life. I’d feel behind, like I was constantly preparing for my life instead of actually living it!

What I think we miss is that the events in our lives aren’t always the things that hold us back. Often it’s the meaning we give them, and the stories we unconsciously carry forward long afterwards. It is possible to remember what happened without continuing to live as though it’s still happening.

By continuing to bring our past into the present, we relive those stories over and over...
