Greyhound racing in Aotearoa New Zealand has at last come to an end.
While we celebrate the end of a pastime that causes predictable harm to man’s best friend, we want to acknowledge that the final week of greyhound racing was not without tragedy.
On Tuesday, 5-year-old Tiger Jane was killed at Addington track in Christchurch, after fracturing her left leg during a race. For Tiger Jane, the end of greyhound racing in Aotearoa was 3 days too late.
The legislation ending greyhound racing, which takes effect today, passed Parliament in April after three independent reviews over nine years repeatedly identified serious animal welfare concerns.
Change like this doesn't happen overnight. It happens because compassionate, determined people refuse to stop speaking up. To our friends at safe and The Greyhound Protection League of New Zealand, and to every rescuer and advocate who helped make this day possible — thank you.
As this chapter closes across the Tasman, the message for Australia couldn't be clearer — we must be next.
Greyhounds deserve lives defined by safety, love and freedom — not by the risks of racing.
