Stand up and be counted Australia!
The Australian Bureau of Statistics conducts a census of our population every 5 years to collect important information about households. This information is then used by governments, their agencies, and Australian businesses to shape policies, direct investment, and provide essential services we all rely on.

Census night is here, and over 5 million households have already completed their Census!

As of 10am on 11 August, the ABS had received more than five million household Census forms—online and paper.

If you haven’t completed it yet, tonight is the night!

If your household has not yet received your instruction letter or a paper form, you can go to census.abs.gov.au to get a Census number and complete it online. Households that would prefer a paper form can request one online or by calling the Census Contact Centre on 1800 181 227.

There is also help and support available for those who need it, including over the phone and in person at pop-up hubs in locations across the country.

📅 Mark your calendar! The national test of AusAlert is happening on Monday 27 July at around 2pm AEST.

AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses cell-broadcast technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

Before AusAlert is ready to use in October 2026, it will be tested across Australia.

On Monday 27 July 2026, a test alert will be sent to all compatible mobile devices in Australia.

This includes most mobile phones, and some smart watches and tablets. Apple iPads don’t receive AusAlerts.

Check this map to see the national test time in your location.

If your device receives the national test, it will vibrate and make a loud siren-like sound for 10 seconds before stopping. As the national test is a Critical Alert, this happens even if your device is on ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’.

Set a calendar reminder for the test and help spread the word to family, friends and colleagues. Staying informed is an important part of being prepared. ✅

Paper incoming passenger cards are set to become a thing of the past, with digital passenger declarations to be rolled out across all Australian international airports and seaports over the next 12 to 18 months.

The new system follows a successful trial involving more than 450,000 travellers and is designed to speed up arrivals and streamline border processing.
