Recently, 20 university healthcare students studying medicine, nursing and allied health headed west for a four-day journey through the Murrumbidgee and south western regions of NSW.

Travelling through , , , , , , , and , students were given behind-the-scenes access to rural health services, local communities and the unique career opportunities available outside metropolitan areas.

For former participant Chloe Kuiper, one Go Rural trip was enough to completely change the course of her future.

“I was from Wollongong and honestly had never been further west than Canberra. Fast forward to 2026 and I work as a new grad OT in paediatrics at Young Hospital.

For Chloe, this trip was a reminder of just how life-changing the Go Rural experience can be. After joining the program as a student unsure of what rural health could offer, she welcomed the new cohort to Young during their visit to Mercy Care Centre and later joined them for dinner—this time as a rural health professional living and working in the very community that first inspired her.

Her story became a powerful example for students, proving that sometimes, all it takes is one trip to completely reshape your future.

In the Autumn 2026 edition of AMA (NSW)’s The NSW Doctor Magazine, RDN’s Theo Clark examines the possibilities for science fiction becoming science fact in remote health, drawing on Extended Reality industry pioneer David Francis’ exposition on the possibilities for rural health of Physical AI as the 'next major wave'.

“The industry has spent years trying to solve the rural skills crisis with better recruitment ads and slightly larger relocation grants,” says David. “But as the National Skills Plan suggests, we need systemic reform. For a start, we need to stop allowing tacit knowledge to bleed out of our regions.”

Using Physical AI, skills can be recorded by smart glasses like Meta RayBans, he explained, which “clone” the expertise of our best practitioners, “distributing their hands-on wisdom to every corner of the outback".

May has been a busy and inspiring month for NSW Rural Resident Medical Officer Cadets, with two Cadet Weekend Trips and the fourth annual Rural Generalist Engagement and Networking Conference ( ) bringing future rural doctors together across regional NSW. 🩺

Reflecting on the month of activities, RDN’s Future Workforce Program Lead Eleanor Knight said, “May has been a particularly dynamic period for the cadets, marked by site visits to Dubbo and Wagga Wagga as well as the coming together of students, JMOs and alumni at RGEN26.

“It is an exciting time of year, with final year cadets applying for internship positions and preparing for the next stage of their journey. The cadet trips provide invaluable opportunities to engage with inspiring local clinicians, spend time in hospitals, and gain a deeper appreciation of what makes each community uniquely special."

Today is National Sorry Day—a time to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. This year’s national theme, 'From Sorry to Action', reflects expectations that governments take urgent steps to create tangible and measurable change within survivors’ lifetimes.

On Thursday 14 May, Rural Doctors Network welcomed a small group of International Medical Graduates (IMGs) to an expert-led workshop focused on preparing for their Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI); an important step of their journey towards rural practice.

The one-day comprehensive workshop was facilitated by Dr Ian Kamerman, a Tamworth-based rural GP and practice owner who is passionate about mentoring and training the next generation of rural health professionals. RDN’s Recruitment Portfolio Lead Jessica Yuen and Medical Workforce Consultant Pahu Hepana were also in attendance to meet with the IMGs, whom they will continue to support on their journeys towards rural practice.

Today is National Sorry Day. It marks the parliamentary submission of the 1997 Bringing Them Home Report; the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families. The landmark report drew on 500 testimonies from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and made 54 recommendations for healing and reconciliation in response to the forcible removal and mistreatment of Indigenous children from their families and communities, known as the Stolen Generations.

Tomorrow commences National Reconciliation Week (NRW), running from 27 May to 3 June 2026. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision – are commemorated during NRW.

This years’ theme, All In, focuses on the encouragement of all Australians to commit to taking action toward reconciliation – a reminder that “reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change”.

💭“I will use this every day”, “very informative” and "I will be better equipped to support discharge of ward patients" – These are just some of the overwhelmingly positive statements and feedback received by participants who took part in two ‘at-capacity’, interactive diabetes education workshops last week, supported by the Care Partnership-Diabetes (CP-D) team in and .

CP-D is designed to improve health outcomes for people living with type 2 diabetes in the Far West and Western NSW Local Health District regions.

These workshops are designed to strengthen workforces by improving access to practical, hands-on training – particularly in the Far West LHD where distance can be a barrier, with many communities located more than 1,000km from Sydney.
