✨ Occupational Therapy Thursday✨
Week five of — this week we're covering sensory processing. 🌿
Sensory processing is how the brain receives, organises and responds to information from our senses — sound, touch, movement, light and more.
When this system is over- or under-responsive, everyday environments can feel unbearable or understimulating, and it can show up as avoidance, distress, or a constant need to move.
OTs work with adults to build strategies for:
🔊 Coping with loud, busy or crowded environments
🧵 Tolerating certain textures (clothing, food,
grooming products)
✋ Regulating responses to touch, movement or light
🧠 Recognising when you're overstimulated and need a break
🏋️ Seeking movement or pressure to stay calm and
focused
🎧 Filtering background noise to concentrate
Sensory processing differences are common in autism, ADHD, anxiety, PTSD and after brain injury — and they're often mistaken for "being difficult" when really, the environment just isn't working for that person's nervous system.
An OT helps identify sensory triggers and build practical strategies and environments that support regulation — so daily life feels more manageable
Save this and share it with someone who needs to hear that support is available 💛
