Pressure risk doesn’t stop at the bedroom or wheelchair.

For many elderly people, toileting routines can involve sitting for 30-60 minutes.

Yet pressure management is often overlooked when prescribing bathroom assistive technology.

🔹Seat surface
🔹IT clearance
🔹Positioning support
🔹Ability to reposition or tilt

All influence how pressure is distributed during these routines.

If these factors aren’t considered, bathroom equipment may unintentionally increase the risk of discomfort, skin breakdown or pressure injury.

Bathroom assistive technology plays an important role in both falls prevention and pressure management.

The right configuration supports safe hygiene routines while protecting skin integrity.

If you’re assessing bathroom equipment for a client with pressure risk, a trial can help determine the most appropriate seating and support configuration.

Bathroom assistive technology is often prescribed too late.

Equipment is introduced after falls, failed transfers or increasing carer strain.

But good prescription shouldn’t just respond to current function. It should anticipate what happens next.

Mobility may change.
Transfers may become more difficult.
Carer involvement may increase.

When equipment only meets today’s needs, bathrooms quickly become unsafe or impractical.

Planning ahead can mean choosing solutions that:
🔹Provide appropriate support now
🔹Adapt as functional ability changes
🔹Reduce the need for repeated equipment replacement
🔹Maintain safe routines for both the individual and carers

Bathroom assistive technology works best when it supports long-term independence, safety and sustainable care.

If you’re planning bathroom equipment for a changing clinical presentation, a trial can help confirm the right configuration early.

Contact ILS to organise a trial with an Assistive Technology Professional.

Even with the right intent, small oversights in complex commode prescription can lead to unsafe or unsustainable outcomes.

Common pitfalls we see in complex presentations:

🔹Prescribing for current function only
Not accounting for progression can mean equipment becomes unsuitable within a short timeframe.

🔹Overlooking pressure risk
Toileting routines can involve prolonged sitting, yet seating, support and pressure management are not always considered.

🔹Limited attention to carer safety
Brake access, hygiene clearance and manual handling demands can significantly impact sustainability.

🔹Measurement and fit missed
Without accurate dimensions, equipment may compromise posture, transfers or hygiene access.

Complex commode prescription isn’t just about selecting a product – it’s about reducing risk across daily routines.

If you’re working through a complex prescription, a trial can help identify and resolve these issues before finalising equipment.

Heading to ATSA Brisbane soon? Sarah Uncle, Head of Clinical Education at ILS will be there, speaking about how to select the right support surface for pressure injury prevention and management.

🛏 Foam, Hybrid, Alternating Air? Oh My!
Making Sense of Support Surface Selection

Support surface prescription is critical for effective pressure injury prevention and management – yet the range of foam, hybrid and alternating air options can feel overwhelming.

In this evidence-informed session, Sarah explores how support surface materials and design influence pressure redistribution, comfort and clinical outcomes.

Through current guidelines, case examples and structured decision-making tools, therapists will gain practical strategies to assess risk, justify prescriptions and confidently select the right support surface.

These sessions reflect what we’re passionate about at ILS – practical education that strengthens clinical reasoning and supports better outcomes.

If you’re attending ATSA Brisbane, we’d love to see you there.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the ILS stand at ATSA Independent Living Expo Sydney last Wednesday and Thursday. It was brilliant to connect with so many passionate healthcare professionals, catch up with familiar faces and meet new ones from across the industry.

A special mention to Sarah Uncle, our Head of Clinical Education, who delivered a standout presentation on pressure care to an engaged audience of OTs. Alongside the stand, our Royale Robooter obstacle course was a highlight again, giving therapists the chance to get hands-on with the chairs and experience the full range of features for themselves.

See you in Brisbane on Wednesday at Stand 198 💙

Fatigue is one of the most common – and most underestimated – barriers to participation.

Many people can technically mobilise, but doing so leaves them exhausted, unsafe or unable to engage in meaningful activities afterwards. Powered mobility can play a key role in energy conservation, allowing people to use their capacity where it matters most.

From a clinical reasoning perspective, powered mobility may:
🔹Reduce physical strain and cumulative fatigue
🔹Support longer periods of upright participation
🔹Enable social, domestic and community engagement
🔹Reduce reliance on carers for mobility tasks

Entry-level powerchairs like the Royale Robooter E40 are often suitable for short community outings and daily routines where simplicity and ease of use support confidence without unnecessary complexity.

Sometimes, the most meaningful outcome is having energy left at the end of the day.
