"Does my child really need a flu vaccine?" 🤔
It's one of the questions we're asked most often in the pharmacy.
The short answer? Yes. 💙
Many people think of the flu as "just a bad cold," but for young children it can be much more serious.
In 2024:
💙 2,329 children aged 16 years and under were hospitalised with influenza.
💙 Almost half of these children were aged 6 months to 4 years.
💙 4.6% of hospitalised children required intensive care.
💙 Tragically, six children lost their lives due to influenza-related complications.
Children are also excellent at spreading the flu. Between childcare, school, sports and family activities, they can easily pass the virus on to grandparents, babies and others who may be more vulnerable.
One important fact many parents don't realise is that children can be contagious before they even look sick. They may carry the virus for 1–4 days before symptoms appear and continue spreading it for up to two weeks—much longer than adults, who are usually contagious for around 3–5 days.
The good news? The flu vaccine is one of the best ways to help protect your child, your family and your community.
🌿 Needle-free flu vaccinations are now available for eligible children through our pharmacy, with traditional flu vaccines also available. Your GP can also provide influenza vaccinations.
