It's RSV Awareness Week and our Public Health Registrar Dr Hannah has one message: protect yourself!

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that infects the airways and lungs - it's also highly contagious and spreads easily.

Dr Hannah is urging vulnerable people to get vaccinated as it has been shown to significantly reduce the risks of severe illness and hospitalisation.

“While some people see it as a common cold, it is much more serious for some people in our community,” said Dr Hannah.

The vaccination is free for older Australians (those 75 years and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 60 years and over), newborns and some children under 2 years of age.

Pregnant women can also get a free vaccine from 28 weeks to protect infants against severe RSV disease from birth for up to 6 months.

If you need health advice please contact 13 HEALTH, talk to your doctor, or in an emergency go to your nearest emergency department.

**Volunteer Simulated Patients Wanted – Toowoomba**

RuralMedEd is looking for volunteers to help train our medical students as Simulated Patients at our Toowoomba training facility.

As a Simulated Patient, you will act out a health condition, injury, or clinical scenario so our students can practise their communication, clinical, and examination skills in a safe and supportive learning environment.

We are looking for people of all ages and backgrounds. No medical experience is required, and full training will be provided. All you need is a willingness to help, a good sense of humour, and an interest in supporting the next generation of rural doctors.

Sessions are held in Toowoomba and usually run for either a half-day or full day, a few times throughout the year. Lunch or refreshments are provided, and volunteers receive a small gift card as a thank you for their time.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to medical education and help shape the future rural health workforce.

If you are located within travelling distance of Toowoomba and would like to learn more, please email: [email protected]

Medicine 1st Year Student Post ! :))

One of the best parts of studying Medicine in Toowoomba is the people around us. The third and fourth years really look after us.

This is Noah, a fourth-year in the middle of his cardio rotation, taking time to share the best ECGs tips and tricks with us.

And it’s not just in the classroom; these same people somehow end up carrying us through social sport as well, pictured here after an exciting netball win !

It’s also a great opportunity to strengthen what you’re already doing well, connect with others working in the space, and learn more about the programs and support available to benefit your practice and community.

We encourage practice managers and practice teams to join us for this informative evening.

Register now – it’s not too late!

🚁 The LifeFlight crews are a vital part of healthcare teams in rural facilities, providing critical support when it’s needed most.

A big thank you to today’s crew for taking the time to chat with our Kingaroy LongLook Griffith University medical students (on the recently opened new helipad) about the service and their aircraft. Our students are usually caring for patients inside the hospital when the crews arrive, but today they were in the middle of a neonatal resuscitation workshop - giving everyone the chance to stop, connect, and learn more about the incredible work LifeFlight does. 🚁
