MTHFR stands for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme produces the active form of folate - 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), and this is needed to convert homocysteine (HCy) into the amino acid methionine. We need methionine for the process of methylation which controls metabolism and gene expression throughout the body. To read more, click the link below!

Choline is an essential nutrient that’s often regarded as a B vitamin. It’s important for cell membranes, cell signalling, DNA synthesis, fat transport and metabolism, and to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. A small amount is made in the liver but we get most of our choline from diet. The recommended daily intake for an adult woman is 425 mg (more during pregnancy) and for an adult man 550 mg. Most Western diets don’t contain enough choline. Low levels cause muscle dysfunction and predispose to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. In the body, choline is oxidised to betaine (trimethylglycine), a powerful methyl group donor. To read more, click the link below!

Pines are an ancient genus of evergreen trees and shrubs found mainly in the northern hemisphere. The medicinal properties of the maritime or French pine (Pinus pinaster) have been extensively studied. The active ingredients are polyphenols, particularly procyanidins, but also catechins and phenolic acids. The bark also contains a lot of vitamin C.

The bark has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The French explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) was the first European to travel inland in North America. He learned from indigenous North Americans that pine bark could prevent scurvy and help heal wounds. To read more, click the link below!

Native to South East Asia, the plant Citrus bergamia is abundant round the Mediterranean, and particularly in Calabria in Southern Italy. Bergamotto in Italian, it’s a pear shaped fruit that’s like a cross between an orange and a lemon. Not especially good to eat but the rind and fruit have amazing antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. They contain complex polyphenol compounds called flavonoids including naringin, neohesperidin and neoeriocitrin. All citrus fruits contain flavonoids but the concentration of them is particularly high in the bergamot orange. To read more, click the link below!
