Ten days ago, on an ordinary drive to collect my daughter from school, another car came around the bend, travelling the wrong way in my lane. Moments later, we collided head-on and everything changed.
That night, I was in surgery, my life quite literally saved by the skill and care of strangers.
The days since have been a blur of pain, fatigue, and the slow, humbling work of healing. My world has become very small - my soft, familiar bed, books I’ve always meant to read, lines in my journal, cups of tea, purring cats nestled next to me, old favourite TV shows playing on my laptop. And stillness. So much stillness.
But within that stillness, I’ve been so deeply held. My beautiful husband and our wonderful children have cared for me with such love and gentleness that it brings me to tears. Friends have sent loving words, gifts and bunches of bright, Spring flowers - small, wild blessings when I’m not able to feel the sunshine on my face and walk among the blossoms and blooms outside.
This enforced rest has stripped things back to their essence. I’ve been reminded of old, old stories. Inanna’s descent. Persephone’s duality. Psyche’s trials. When everything has been stripped away, that which matters most is left revealed. And I have seen that it is simply love, kindness, gentleness, presence.
I don’t know yet what will grow from this rebirth. I only know that I want to live from this place of slowness, care, gratitude and deep love.
