Sometimes the kinesiologist needs a kinesiologist too 🤍
For Mother’s Day this year I was gifted an Oura Ring and, as a kinesiologist, I have become slightly obsessed with the information this tiny ring gives me about my body.
Every morning it lets me know whether I’m ready to take on whatever the day throws at me… or, on other days, gives me what feels like a fairly dire warning that my resilience is low and perhaps I should cocoon myself away from anything remotely stressful!
So how does a ring know?
It monitors things like my sleep, resting heart rate and HRV (heart rate variability) and, importantly, looks at the trends over time. These are all useful indicators of how well my body is recovering and responding to stress.
And lately, mine has been telling me something I probably already knew.
I’m not recovering particularly well.
My HRV has been consistently very low, and I feel like my body has become far too comfortable living in “fight or flight” and has forgotten how to properly switch back into “rest and digest”.
As someone who talks about the nervous system and the impact of stress every day, there’s a certain irony in realising that mine needs some attention too.
So today, I went and saw a kinesiologist.
For me, this isn’t about a quick fix. I know I need to give my body some time and consistency, and I’m planning on having a series of sessions and seeing how I respond.
But I have to say, after just one session today, I feel like someone has pressed a little reset button. I feel calmer. Lighter. And almost as though my body is saying, thank you, I needed that.
And it just feels really good to be doing something for me.
Like so many of us, I spend a lot of my time juggling work, family, relationships, keeping fit, trying to eat well and generally keeping all the balls in the air. It’s incredibly easy to keep going and assume that because we’re coping, we’re okay.
Sometimes we need looking after too.
Today was a lovely reminder of why I fell in love with kinesiology in the first place. 🤍
If any of this feels familiar to you, reach out. I’d genuinely love to help.
