Door 2 - Recovery from Eating Disorders

Door 2 - Recovery from Eating Disorders The Door 2 Difference - Understanding eating disorders from the inside out.

02/06/2026

Jan spent an entire day wearing two different Birkenstocks.

Meetings. Conversations. Advocacy. Work.

Not one person mentioned it. The funny thing? The world didn't end.

At Door2, we spend a lot of time with people who have learned that getting things "wrong" feels unsafe.
Who've been taught that mistakes are embarrassing.
That being different is a problem.
That perfection is the goal.

But maybe being human was always enough. Authenticity matters more than perfection.

And maybe two different shoes are a reminder that most people are too busy worrying about their own feet to notice yours.

How different would recovery feel if connection came before correction?

Conversations that were once impossible becoming possible.
Families beginning to understand what sits beneath the behaviours.

At Door2, we know that when connection returns, healing can begin

The right people don’t make you feel “too much.”
They don’t ask you to shrink, mask, or perform to belong.
Healing changes in the presence of people who let you exhale.
People who meet you in your joy.
People who help you feel more like yourself, not less 💛

These girls didn’t care where they were.
They weren’t masking. They weren’t trying to fit in.

They found each other, created their own world, and followed joy 💛

So many neurodivergent people grow up learning their intensity, excitement, movement, sensitivity, or 'the space they take up' is something to suppress.

But what if those things were never the problem? What if safety, understanding, and belonging change everything? Safe people and spaces matter.

Share this with someone who deserves to take up space exactly as they are.

Jan isn’t scared of eating disorders.

Because she’s seen what happens when people are finally understood.
When families are supported.
When insiders are given a voice.

So many people arrive at Door2, exhausted from surviving.
Surviving shame.
Surviving fear.
Surviving systems that cause harm.

At Door2, we believe recovery is more than behaviour change. Sometimes, it begins in quieter moments, just like this one. The nervous system calms a little, the world feels less threatening, and an insider can slowly start to reconnect to themselves again.

Save this for the days that feel hard.

In this episode, Jan and Audrey explore the "paradox of survival"- challenging the belief that self-criticism or resistance to recovery reflects a true desire for self-destruction.

Together, they propose that many eating disorder behaviours may actually be nervous system survival responses.

Rather than viewing recovery as simply compliance around food or ED behaviours, this episode reframes healing as the gradual creation of nervous system safety through connection, patience, curiosity and shame free support.

So many people arrive at Door2 exhausted from fighting to survive systems that never truly saw them.
We believe recovery should feel more like understanding, connection, and moments of safety like this.

“People who don’t listen… who don’t want to learn… that makes me really PI**ED OFF.”

Jan isn’t holding back—and for good reason.

This is what happens when lived experience is ignored in systems that claim to help.

If that hits a nerve, it should.

The work Door2 does was born from trauma, love, and the refusal to let others suffer the same way. Jan won't stop this work or fiercely advocating until eating disorder treatment becomes safer, more inclusive, and truly neuro-affirming.

We listen to carers.
We value insider voices.
And we work alongside the whole support network — because understanding changes everything
