Kids need to feel safe before they can process and learn. It’s not uncommon in a therapy session for a child to experience feelings of inadequacy. The voice in their head saying they are not good enough. Memories of laughter from peers when they struggled to do what seems to come easily to everyone else. Experiences held in the body with no way of releasing.
Fine motor skill (FMS) development is only one side of the coin. Creative Arts Therapy provides gentle support for the child to feel safe in their bodies. Through arts making, new pathways in the brain transform how they see the world around them and healing begins.
Creative Arts Therapy also offers many opportunities to practice fine motor skills (FMS) in a fun, relaxed environment. This becomes a holistic approach to FMS development.
This month I completed a practitioner's course on supporting fine motor development with the OT Brains Trust.
Did you know that programs targeting everyday experiences are more likely to succeed over indirect methods? Incorporating FMS development in the bath (bath crayons) and outdoor play (sq**rt guns) provides play centred practice.
Lily Valley Creative Arts Therapy uses evidenced based practices to support FMS development.
