Not all skin cancer doctors hold the same qualifications — and the difference matters.

An Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor is a formal designation awarded by the Skin Cancer College of Australasia, the only body in Australia and New Zealand that offers accreditation and fellowship specifically in skin cancer medicine. It requires advanced training and rigorous formal assessment across diagnosis, dermoscopy, and surgical technique. It is held by a select group of doctors nationally.

Every Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor at SkinGP Woodend has completed this pathway. They are the only Accredited Skin Cancer Doctors practising in the Macedon Ranges.

For patients in Woodend, Kyneton, Gisborne, Lancefield, Romsey, and surrounds — that level of dedicated expertise is now local, with no referral required.

A patient can present with 100, even 200 lesions on their body. Tracking which ones have changed since the last visit — and by how much — is where AI genuinely changes what's possible.

The FotoFinder Moleanalyzer Pro at SkinGP Woodend analyses every lesion captured during a Full Skin Check and flags the ones that have changed over the past six to twelve months. That gives our doctors a precise clinical focus — not a shortcut, but a sharper starting point for the dermoscopic examination that follows.

The doctor's eye, the years of training, and the clinical judgement remain central to every assessment. AI directs attention to where it matters most.

Meet Janelle Judge, EN Skin Cancer Nurse at SkinGP Woodend.

Janelle has been nursing since 1997 — and by her own account, it's always felt like where she's meant to be. Her interest in skin cancer is personal. A family history of the disease shaped her commitment to early detection, patient education, and the kind of care that makes a real difference before things get serious.

For patients who arrive nervous — and plenty do — Janelle's approach is straightforward. She explains the process clearly so there are no surprises, keeps things relaxed with a bit of humour where it fits, and has a habit of finding out what someone is interested in and running with it. By the time the appointment is done, most people barely noticed the time.

When she's not in the clinic, Janelle is with family and friends, out on the road in the caravan with her three dogs, or at the bridge table — which she'll tell you is as much a mental workout as it is a hobby.

We're glad to have her as part of the team.

A skin check at SkinGP Woodend covers more than most people expect.

Every Full Skin Check begins with FotoFinder total body photography — a complete digital map of your skin, stored and compared at every future visit. An Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor then examines you head to toe using high-definition dermoscopy, with AI-assisted analysis flagging anything that warrants closer attention.

Where treatment is needed, it happens here. Surgical excision, punch biopsy, cryotherapy, and photodynamic therapy are all performed on-site. Second opinions are available, and urgent lesion reviews can be arranged by calling the clinic directly.

No referral required. Medicare rebates apply.

For patients in Woodend, Kyneton, Gisborne, Lancefield, Romsey, Daylesford, Castlemaine, and across regional Victoria, that's the full picture of dedicated skin cancer care — without the trip to Melbourne.

Skin cancer can appear as a changing mole, a new spot, or something that simply doesn't look right. The ABCDE guide is a useful starting point for knowing what to watch for between skin checks.

A — Asymmetry: one half is unlike the other

B — Border: irregular, ragged, or blurred edges

C — Colour: uneven shades of brown, black, red, white or blue

D — Diameter: larger than 6mm — roughly the size of a pencil eraser

E — Evolving: any change in size, shape, colour, or sensation

A spot that's changing, growing, bleeding or itching warrants a professional assessment. So does anything that simply doesn't look right to you — skin cancer doesn't always announce itself clearly.

At SkinGP Woodend, our Accredited Skin Cancer Doctors use high-definition dermoscopy to examine lesions at up to 400x magnification — revealing structures that are invisible to the naked eye. No referral required.

When a doctor uses a dermatoscope at SkinGP Woodend, there are years of specialised training behind what they're looking at.

Dermoscopy reveals structures beneath the skin's surface that are invisible to the naked eye — but interpreting those images accurately takes considerable expertise. After completing general practice training, it takes a further two and a half years of dedicated study to reach accreditation in dermoscopy. Every doctor at SkinGP Woodend is either accredited or actively completing that pathway.

It's one of the things that makes a dedicated skin cancer clinic a different environment to a general practice — and why the level of detection here reflects that difference.

One of the things that matters most to us is being part of this community — not just as a clinic, but as people who live and work here too.

Melanoma March Woodend brought that into focus. Events like this are a reminder of why Dr Ashvin Arul and the whole SkinGP team do what they do — and why having a dedicated skin cancer clinic in regional Victoria matters beyond what happens inside the clinic walls.

Skin cancer affects more Australians than any other cancer, and for too long, accessing dedicated specialist care has meant navigating Melbourne. Patients are travelling to Woodend from as far as Bendigo and Swan Hill — by car, or straight off the Vline — to access Accredited Skin Cancer Doctors and advanced imaging without setting foot in the city.

90% of melanomas can be cured by surgery — if caught early.

That single statistic is the reason SkinGP Woodend exists. A full skin check, a documented baseline, and regular monitoring are what make early detection possible. For patients across the Macedon Ranges, that level of dedicated skin cancer care is now available locally, with no referral required.

A skin check isn't just about what's on your skin today.

What makes the FotoFinder system at SkinGP Woodend genuinely valuable is what happens at your second visit, and your third. Every Full Skin Check begins with total body photography — a complete digital record of every mole and lesion on your skin. At each subsequent visit, those images are compared against the new ones, making subtle changes visible that would otherwise be easy to miss.

For Accredited Skin Cancer Doctor Dr Hao Xiao, that longitudinal record is one of the most important tools in early melanoma detection.
