Tahmid’s thesis was carried out at NeuroGen Healthcare as part of his MS research under the academic supervision of 𝐃𝐫. 𝐌𝐝. 𝐎𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐤, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐫. 𝐌𝐝. 𝐈𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐧, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka, serving as co-supervisor.

Throughout his thesis journey, Athoi Ganguly, 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫, Genetics & Genomic Medicine Centre (GGMC), NeuroGen Healthcare, served as his 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐫, providing continuous scientific guidance and support throughout the research process, from planning and data analysis to the overall development of the thesis.

NeuroGen Healthcare recently organized a large-scale Scientific Seminar in collaboration with the Department of Nephrology, Chittagong Medical College Hospital, focusing on modern approaches to the diagnosis of rare and genetic kidney diseases. The seminar was attended by renowned professors and physicians from Chittagong, with important discussions on the accurate diagnosis and management of rare and complex diseases.

Through a series of patient case studies, she highlighted how 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐱 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 that may remain undiagnosed for years, and how a definitive genetic diagnosis can guide clinicians toward more appropriate and informed management strategies.

Her case-based discussions also highlighted the clinical utility of genetic diagnosis, including its role in patient management, prognosis, family risk assessment, and future planning.

Yesterday, a scientific seminar titled "𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐚𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐊𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞" was held at the Conference Hall of 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞, jointly organized by the Department of Paediatric Nephrology, Chittagong Medical College, and NeuroGen Healthcare.

We discussed the genetic basis of 𝐟𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 & 𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐎𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 (𝐏𝐎𝐈), 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬, 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬, highlighting how genetic evaluation and 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 can support accurate diagnosis, informed reproductive planning, and improved patient care.

🧬𝟏𝟐 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐭 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐫!

🧠 A unique 12-gene molecular signature has been identified during the early stages of Rett syndrome.

🧬 Rett syndrome is primarily caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene.

🔬 For the first time, researchers separately analyzed healthy (MECP2⁺) and mutant (MECP2⁻) brain cells.

🔄 Trilaminar interneurons were identified as the brain cell type most severely affected by the disease.

🔬 Surprisingly, altered gene activity was also observed in genetically normal neighboring brain cells, suggesting non-cell-autonomous effects.

📌 These findings could support the development of early biomarkers and targeted therapies for Rett syndrome.

👉Clinically, a mitochondrial disorder was suspected. 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐱𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐖𝐄𝐒) 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐍𝐀 𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐆𝐆𝐌𝐂, 𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐆𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞.

👉Compound heterozygous pathogenic variants were identified in the 𝑬𝑪𝑯𝑺1 gene.
👉Biallelic pathogenic variants in 𝑬𝑪𝑯𝑺1 confirmed the genetic diagnosis of Mitochondrial Short-Chain Enoyl-CoA Hydratase 1 Deficiency (OMIM #616277).

🧬 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝑬𝑪𝑯𝑺𝟏 𝐃𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲?
👉It is a rare autosomal recessive mitochondrial metabolic disorder that impairs cellular energy metabolism.

📢 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞:
👉This case highlights that not all children with developmental delay, speech delay, or hyperactive behavior have Autism Spectrum Disorder.
👉When these features are accompanied by developmental regression, seizures, elevated lactate levels, or other neurological red flags, an underlying genetic or mitochondrial disorder should be considered.
