IEEE NSU Student Branch, WIE Affinity Group A sector of benefits, eligibility, and other opportunities for professional and student members of IEEE Women in Engineering.

IEEE WIE NSU, an Affinity Group from NSU Student Branch, dedicated to promoting women and inspiring girls from North South University and around the world to follow their academic interests to a career in IT and engineering. This affinity group was established in 20th June 2016 and since then its members have been actively working on their events and projects. Historically in Bangladesh (and also

in NSU), the female presence has been low in science and engineering subjects. So we have been working hard to encourage, engage and motivate the female students through IEEE opportunities for developing their skills in IT and engineering for professional career development. At the end of July 2016, the number of IEEE Student members in IEEE WIE Affinity Group NSU Student Branch had reached 50. We have conducted our first ever event on MATLAB Workshop placed at our home ground NSU which had immense response from the students as participants. We look forward to organize many other events on tech and workshop pretty soon. History of WIE Bangladesh Section:
2011 is the first full calendar year for women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group, IEEE Bangladesh Section. At the end of 2012, the number of female IEEE student members was above 80. At the end of 2014, the number of female IEEE member was around 56, graduate female IEEE member was 14, the undergraduate female IEEE student member was higher in number than in 2013. Due to the massive campaigning from the WIE affinity group, IEEE Bangladesh Section, most of the existing female student members of IEEE responded to our call and actively participated in the WIE activities in 2014 and 2015. Their huge interest and participation in the WIE activities clearly indicate that we have achieved an expected growth of the WIE affinity Group’s membership. In 2015 WIE AG, IEEE Bangladesh Section had 6 members, 25 graduate members and 191 student members. Up to June 2016 WIE AG, IEEE BD section has 4 student branches (4 more student branches are on the process of formation) with more than 400 members across the country. IEEE WIE is led by a diverse body of elected and appointed volunteer members. The governance structure includes boards for operational areas as well as bodies representing members in the 45 Societies and technical Councils and ten worldwide geographic regions. The WIE Committee (WIEC) is responsible for facilitating the development of programs and activities that:

- promote the entry into and the retention of women in engineering programs
- enhance the career advancement of women in the profession
- promote IEEE membership and retention of IEEE women members.

On 7th July, 2026, the IEEE NSU Student Branch WIE Affinity Group successfully completed the webinar titled “3D Technology Overview, 3D Integration and Die Stacking”, which was held online via Zoom. The purpose of the session was to provide participants with insights into advanced semiconductor technologies, 3D integration and heterogeneous integration solutions that are driving the future of AI hardware and computing systems. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor, Dept. of EEE, BUET, and Chair, IEEE WIE Committee 2023-24, was also in attendance.
The event began with a warm welcome from the host, who briefly introduced the purpose of the session, before inviting the speaker, Dr. Mukta G. Farooq, an IEEE Fellow and IBM Distinguished Research Scientist, to take the floor. The speaker began her presentation with an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC), highlighting the growing hardware demands required to support modern AI applications. She then discussed advanced packaging technologies and introduced the concept of chiplets, explaining their importance in system optimization, cost efficiency, and overall performance. Moving forward, Dr. Farooq provided an overview of 3D integration for AI systems and discussed various design considerations. She elaborated on heterogeneous integration approaches, silicon interposers, and the middle-process method of 3D integration before introducing Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology and its key process considerations. Through practical examples and case studies, she demonstrated how 3D stacking enables high bandwidth, low latency and energy-efficient access to memory without compromising functionality. Concluding her presentation, Dr. Farooq emphasized that the increasing demands of AI workloads are accelerating the adoption of heterogeneous integration solutions and highlighted the advantages of 3D integration in achieving compact, high-performance and energy-efficient computing systems. She also expressed her gratitude to all those who contributed to making the session possible.
An interactive Q&A session followed the speaker’s presentation, during which participants had the opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion. Afterward, the host presented a virtual token of appreciation to Dr. Mukta G. Farooq on behalf of the IEEE NSU Student Branch WIE Affinity Group. The Session Chair and Faculty Advisor, Ms. Reeshoon Sayera, then delivered the closing remarks, thanking the speaker and participants and encouraging everyone to continue learning and exploring new technologies. Following this, Dr. Celia Shahnaz briefly spoke about WIE Day 2026 and introduced several accomplished former students currently working as professionals in the USA. On 6th July, the IEEE NSU Student Branch WIE Affinity Group successfully organized the talk titled “Technology with Purpose: Harnessing AI & Data in Industry to Innovate Responsibly, Inspire Globally, and Lead with Integrity" at North South University from 1 PM to 2:30 PM.

The event began with a warm welcome from the hosts, Shihab Sharar and Hafsa Khan, who gave a brief overview of IEEE, IEEE WIE AG, and the WIE Day 2026 celebration. They further elaborated on the event’s purpose and the importance of ethical innovation and requested the speaker to take the stage. The speaker introduced herself and shared her personal journey, from academic life to professional life, innovation, and artificial intelligence. She emphasized the importance of innovation with purpose in order to help people and make their lives easier, and showed a pipeline starting from identifying problems to creating solutions for them. Moreover, she explained finding purpose as an iterative process, where experience and reflection lead to improvement. The speaker then opened the floor to an interactive Q&A session and answered the participants’ questions. After this, the hosts thanked the speaker and asked the WIE Day Ambassadors to make a speech. Nusaiba Khan, a WIE Day Ambassador, gave a speech on WIE Day, its theme and importance, and the importance of women in STEM and their rights.

The hosts then requested Ms. Reeshoon Sayera, faculty advisor of the IEEE NSU SB WIE AG, to present the token of appreciation to the speaker. Finally, the event ended with a group photo and cake-cutting ceremony, signifying the end of WIE Day celebrations.

On 3rd July 2026, the IEEE NSU Student Branch Women in Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group, in collaboration with the IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU PES Student Branch Chapter, IEEE NSU RAS Student Branch Chapter, and IEEE NSU IAS Student Branch Chapter, successfully organized the workshop "Technology with Purpose: Building Accessible Motion Capture Systems Using Low-Cost Microcontrollers" at North South University from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

The event began with a warm welcome from the hosts, Jasiya Mohayra and A.K.M. Mohiuddin Siddike, followed by an insightful session conducted by Mostakim Hossain, Former Vice Chair (Technical), IEEE NSU SB WIE AG. Participants explored the fundamentals of motion capture by building a DIY MoCap system using an ESP32 microcontroller and an MPU6050 accelerometer and gyroscope sensor. They also learned how motion data can be integrated into a web-based 3D environment using the Web Serial API, along with sensor calibration, data interpretation, and real-time motion visualization through interactive demonstrations and hands-on exercises.

The workshop enhanced participants' understanding of embedded systems, robotics, motion capture technology, and interactive application development while strengthening their practical problem-solving skills.

The event concluded with a closing speech by Farhana Rahman, Chairperson of IEEE NSU SB WIE AG, who thanked the instructor, participants, collaborating societies, Executive Body members, coordinators, and volunteers. As a token of appreciation, a crest was presented to Mostakim Hossain by Farhana Rahman, alongside Treasurer S.M. Tanvir Akram Prince and the coordinators. The workshop concluded with a group photograph and refreshments.

On 1st July 2026, in observance of IEEE WIE Day 2026, the IEEE NSU Student Branch Women In Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group, in collaboration with the IEEE NSU Student Branch, IEEE NSU PES SBC, IEEE NSU RAS SBC, and IEEE NSU IAS SBC, organised a seminar titled “Adapt, Innovate, Lead: The Dynamic Mindset Every CS Professional Needs”. This session featured Dr. Sumaiya Tabassum Nimi, Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering, North South University, as the keynote speaker.
The event began with the hosts welcoming the participants, introducing IEEE and the IEEE Women In Engineering (WIE) Affinity Group, and inviting Dr. Nimi ma'am to share her insights on the evolving landscape of computer science and the mindset required to thrive in this rapidly evolving field. Dr. Nimi ma'am opened her lecture highlighting the competitiveness of the CSE industry, emphasizing that technical knowledge alone is not enough to stand out. She urged students to keep learning, stay adaptable, and build practical skills outside the classroom as Computer Science is a rapidly changing field. She used examples like Netflix, Blockbuster, and Nokia where she showed that those who embrace change remain relevant.
Dr. Nimi then drew the attention of the participants to interdisciplinary learning, explaining that computer science increasingly overlaps with diverse fields, and encouraged participants to anticipate the far future of this field. For that, she suggested students remain informed about technological advancements, expand their professional networks, maintain GitHub and LinkedIn profiles, and build a leadership mindset. Concluding her lecture, Dr. Nimi inspired participants to develop a mindset of lifelong learning, adaptability, and leadership.
After an engaging Q&A session, the event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from the hosts, who conveyed their sincere appreciation to Dr. Sumaiya Tabassum Nimi for delivering an insightful and inspiring seminar. The event concluded with a photo session to preserve the memories and to commemorate the celebration of the IEEE WIE Day.

We are thrilled to announce and would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Reeshoon Sayera on being appointed as the Faculty Advisor of IEEE NSU Student Branch Women In Engineering Affinity Group.

It is a matter of pride to us that Ma'am brings strong academic and industry expertise to this role. She completed her M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida, USA, where she specialized in Computer Vision, and her B.Sc. in Computer Science & Engineering from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), Bangladesh. Prior to joining academia, she worked as an AI Engineer at Intelligent Machines in Dhaka, contributing to large-scale AI solutions for retail analytics, counterfeit detection, and credit risk modeling.

We strongly believe, with you by our side, IEEE NSU Student Branch, WIE Affinity Group will achieve great achievements. It is our immense honor and privilege to have such a remarkable person as our mentor, and we look forward to learning and growing under your guidance.
