Achilles Tendinopathy:
More Than Just Heel Pain
Achilles tendinopathy is one of the most common overuse injuries, especially among runners, athletes, and individuals who suddenly increase their activity level. It occurs when the Achilles tendon is repeatedly overloaded, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced function rather than acute inflammation.
đ Common Symptoms
âĸ Pain or stiffness at the back of the heel, especially in the morning.
âĸ Pain that improves with light activity but worsens after exercise.
âĸ Tenderness when pressing on the tendon.
âĸ Thickening of the tendon in chronic cases.
â ī¸ Risk Factors
âĸ Sudden increase in training intensity.
âĸ Tight calf muscles.
âĸ Poor footwear.
âĸ Limited ankle mobility.
âĸ Weak calf muscles.
đĒ Physiotherapy Management
â
Relative load modification (avoid complete rest).
â
Progressive calf strengthening, especially eccentric and heavy slow resistance exercises.
â
Stretching when appropriate.
â
Improving ankle mobility.
â
Correcting training errors and biomechanical issues.
đĢ Common Mistake
Don't stop moving completely! Controlled loading is one of the most effective ways to help the tendon heal, adapt, and regain strength.
