Types of Strokes:
There are three main types of strokes: ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and transient ischemic attack.
1. Ischemic Stroke:
The most common type of stroke, ischemic stroke, occurs when a blood clot or plaque blocks a blood vessel, reducing blood flow to the brain. Plaques are fatty deposits that can build up in arteries over time, narrowing or blocking them. This is known as atherosclerosis, the main cause of an ischemic stroke. Ischemic strokes are the most common type of stroke, accounting for about 87% of all strokes.
2. Hemorrhagic Stroke:
Resulting of bleeding in the brain, hemorrhagic strokes can be further classified into intracerebral hemorrhage (within the brain tissue) or subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding in the space around the brain). Hemorrhagic strokes can be caused by conditions such as high blood pressure or aneurysms.
3. Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA):
A transient ischemic attack (TIA), often referred to as a âmini-stroke,â is a short-term blockage of blood flow to the brain. Itâs often caused by a blood clot that travels from elsewhere in the body to the brainâs blood vessels. Other causes include air bubbles or fatty material. TIAs donât cause permanent damage, but they are a âwarning strokeâ that can signal a full-blown stroke. The effects of a TIA last a few minutes to a few hours and fully resolve within 24 hours.
