"Training on Drought-Tolerant Agriculture Held to Address Climate Change Impacts in the Barind Region"
A day-long training session was organized in Ranihati Union of Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila to promote drought-tolerant agricultural technologies as a means to combat the adverse effects of climate change in the Barind region. The training took place this Wednesday morning at the Ranihati Union Parishad complex. 'Proyas Manobik Unnayan Society' organized the event under the 'Extended Community Climate Change Project-Drought' (ECCCP-Drought), with support from the Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
Twenty members of the Climate Change Adaptation Group (CCAG) participated in the training. During the session, participants were briefed on the impacts of climate change, remedial measures, sustainable agricultural practices, and drought-tolerant farming strategies. Additionally, hands-on instruction was provided on selecting drought-resilient fruits and crops, establishing homestead gardens, producing vermicompost, and implementing water conservation techniques.
The workshop was attended by Md. Khaledur Rahman, Deputy Director (Agriculturist) of the Horticulture Centre in Kalyanpur, Chapainawabganj; Md. Shamsul Alam, Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (Agriculturist) from the Department of Agricultural Extension; and Md. Foyjul Haque, an Agriculturist associated with the project. Project Coordinator Bakul Kumar Ghose delivered a key address outlining the necessary actions to address the specific climatic challenges faced by the Barind region.
A significant focus of the training was encouraging farmers to use organic fertilizers to promote eco-friendly agriculture; the methods and benefits of vermicompost production were discussed in detail. Furthermore, Md. Arman, Branch Manager of Unit-10, provided information regarding the loan programs currently operating under Proyas ECCCP-Drought project.
Md. Roknuzzaman (CMO-Civil) assisted with the workshop, while the Project Coordinator himself coordinated the training activities. Participants in the training stated that such initiatives would motivate them to adopt agricultural adaptation strategies and new technology-based farming methods in the face of drought conditions.
