Piaffe arises by collecting a horse in trot. Piaffe is like a trot in place without suspension phase, and with only one hoof print forward in every step.
Because there's no suspension phase some trainers state that it's not the piaffe that's the utmost form of collection in trot, but the passage.
For the horse it doesn't matter what we define as the 'truth', what matters is that the piaffe is a perfect exercise to shift the weight back towards the hind legs to free the fragile front legs, and it's a great exercise to supple and strengthen the haunches.
Teaching a horse the piaffe is not a 'quick fix' rather it's a gradual and long process which might take years to gain perfection.
In Straightness Training we develop the piaffe in hand, on the longe line (picture), at liberty and under the rider. All training components will give something to the piaffe and they work together in a holistic way where in the end the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts.
