Sarau …..
Sarau is a series of stills and a short film birthed from our previous project The City They Walk. Created in Bahia, we shaped this work in two forms because the story needed more than one way to speak. It is inspired by the Candomble spiritual practices and by African spiritual symbolism and mythology that move quietly through colour, gesture, and ritual.

The Brazilian symbol artists used the body as a medium of language. They painted with an understanding that felt older and deeply connected to the ancestors. Once the symbols touched the skin the work shifted. It felt as if the message was rising through us rather than being crafted by us. A kind of knowing that lives deep within our DNA.

For me Sarau became a quiet revelation. A reminder that the body remembers what the mind forgets. The film and the stills hold that truth in different ways but honour the same current. Sarau stays open. It does not tell you what to see. It invites you to listen and let meaning find you.

……..The City They Walk

Salvador carries spirit in its streets. The city hums with rhythm that refuses to fade, where the ordinary is always close to the divine.
The City They Walk was born from this encounter. We drew on the guardianship of the Orisha and the raw energy of Bahia’s communities. Through still and moving images we try to hold onto what cannot be held …. presence, rhythm, divinity in motion.

Some gods move through light, not temples. But sometimes they choose the dark.
They rise above the noise, finding sanctuaries in unexpected places.
On a rooftop in the favela, the Orixa stands between earth and sky , where prayer meets rhythm and colour becomes breath.

Salvador holds that spirit in its streets. The city hums with memory, where the divine and the everyday live side by side.

The City They Walk was born from this pulse, guided by the Orixa and the heartbeat of Bahia’s people.
Through still and moving images, we try to hold what cannot be held ….presence, rhythm, divinity in motion.

The City They Walk
The Orisa cannot be contained. They shift, they return, they arrive in forms that defy expectation. Here, presence takes on a masculine face….. strength embodied, spirit made flesh, power moving through the streets.

Carnival is proof we survived.
It carries the memory of the African diaspora, resistance turned into art, heritage transformed into movement.
We honour the past, live in the present, and shape the future in full colour on our terms.

Gold is not the point.
The shine is a signal.
He walks ahead not as a servant but as a symbol.
She rides not for show but for memory.

This is what it looks like when we take the story back.
Foil becomes armour.
Mas becomes ritual.
Every step carries legacy.

Brown paper like skin
Creased worn resilient
Wrapped around a body that carries memory without speaking

He stands not in performance but in presence
Gold chains like lineage
Sandals like soil
Paper like protection
A masquerade reimagined not for theatre but for truth

This is not costume
It is code
It is history bent forward
It is Afrofuturism shaped by the past not to escape it
But to speak to it
To honour it
To transform it

This was one of those shoots where everything . costume, colour, energy .. just came alive.
Melissa called it ‘Fancy Fancy’ and that name really says it all.
Proud to be part of this one with an incredible team.

I’ve been meaning to share this and today felt like the right moment. With Windrush in mind I’ve been thinking about legacy and what we hold onto and carry forward.

This piece was part of the Sankofa theme by — a mix of Ghanaian masquerade and Caribbean Fancy Sailor traditions, brought together through upcycling and design that speaks for itself.

Melissa’s work is always rooted in culture and intention. Being behind the camera for this one felt like documenting a story that already knew where it was going. We weren’t just capturing a look, we were holding space for memory and movement.

Grateful to the full team that brought this to life
