This week, IOM Botswana, led by Chief of Mission Itayi Viriri, met with the Botswana Public Health Institute, led by Executive Director Dr. Pamela Smith Lawrence, to explore opportunities for stronger collaboration on migration and public health.

Discussions focused on strengthening disease surveillance, public health preparedness, knowledge sharing and capacity building, while highlighting the role of IOM’s Migration Health Assessment Centre in supporting migrant health through health assessments, TB screening and infection prevention measures.

As people move, health systems must work together. Stronger partnerships mean better preparedness, healthier communities and more inclusive health systems for everyone.

Chief of Mission Itayi Viriri paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Batiraishe Henry Mukonoweshuro, Ambassador of the Republic of Zimbabwe to Botswana and current Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, for a constructive exchange on shared migration priorities and the longstanding ties between Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Discussions highlighted the importance of strengthened cross-border cooperation, continued bilateral engagement, and coordinated approaches to migration that support mobility, regional integration and sustainable development.

IOM values its continued partnership with the Republic of Zimbabwe and remains committed to advancing dialogue, cooperation and migration governance across the region.
