A question many patients think about… but rarely ask:
When is it safe to return to s*xual intimacy after spinal fusion surgery?
S*xual activity is an important part of quality of life, yet it’s often left out of post-operative conversations. Evidence suggests that for many patients, a gradual return to s*xual intimacy is safe once pain is controlled, wounds are healed, and mobility allows comfortable movement , typically around 2–3 weeks after surgery.
At CNS, we individualise this guidance. Timing depends on the severity of the spinal pathology, surgical complexity, fusion levels, overall fitness, and the risk profile of the procedure. Just as importantly, it depends on how the patient feels ie confidence, comfort, and readiness matter.
The key principles are simple: no pain, no strain, no forced positions. If it feels uncomfortable, stop. Recovery is not a race.
This is a conversation we encourage. Because good outcomes aren’t just about solid fusion, they’re about restoring life, in all its dimensions.
