🌿 Colon Cancer Awareness: Know Your Risk, Protect Your Health

Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Many cases begin as small polyps that can be removed before they become cancer. If you have risk factors such as family history, bowel disease, unhealthy diet, or you’re over 45, screening is especially important.

✔️ Early detection saves lives
✔️ Screening can prevent cancer
✔️ Don’t wait for symptoms

Cancer Screening 👇

✅ Who Should Be Screened?

Average-risk adults
• Start screening at age 45
• Continue until age 75
• Ages 76–85: individualised decision
• >85: generally stop screening
✅ Screening Options
Non-invasive stool tests
• FIT test (stool occult blood immunochemical): every 1 year
• gFOBT: every 1 year
• FIT-DNA (Cologuard): every 3 years

Direct visualization
• Colonoscopy: every 10 years (gold standard)
• CT colonography: every 5 years
• Flexible sigmoidoscopy: every 5 years

🚩 Higher Risk Patients — Start Earlier

Screen before age 45 and more often if:
• First-degree relative with colon cancer or advanced polyp
→ start at 40 years OR 10 years earlier than youngest affected family member
• Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s / Ulcerative Colitis)
• Hereditary syndromes
(Lynch syndrome, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis)
• Previous colorectal cancer or adenomas

❗ Screening vs Symptoms

Screening is for people with no symptoms.
If a patient has symptoms, investigate — not screening:
• Re**al bleeding / blood in stool
• Unexplained anaemia
• Change in bowel habits
• Weight loss
• Persistent abdominal pain

They need diagnostic colonoscopy, not routine screening.

Colon cancer is highly preventable.
Polyps can be found and removed before they turn into cancer.
