Sudden Hair Shedding? It Could Be Acute Telogen Effluvium. 🌿
Acute Telogen Effluvium (ATE) is a common form of sudden, excessive, diffuse hair shedding. Many people become frightened because their hair may start coming out noticeably while washing, brushing, or even simply running their fingers through it.
The important thing to understand is that the shedding often begins 2–3 months after a triggering event, so the cause may not be immediately obvious.
Common triggers include significant physical or emotional stress, fever or illness, surgery, rapid weight loss, restrictive dieting, iron or nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems, hormonal changes, and certain medications.
ATE is generally non-scarring and potentially reversible, but identifying and addressing the underlying trigger is an important part of management. Sometimes sudden shedding can also reveal previously unnoticed female-pattern hair loss, which is why a proper scalp and trichology assessment matters.
