From a TCM perspective, your period shouldn’t be painful. 🩸

Some mild awareness or heaviness can be normal, but cramping that has you reaching for painkillers, curled up in bed, missing work, or unable to function is your body telling you something is out of balance.

In Chinese Medicine, pain = stagnation. When Qi and Blood aren’t flowing freely through the uterus, pain can occur.

The type of pain can also give us clues:
• Sharp/stabbing + clots → Blood stagnation
• Cramping relieved by heat → Cold in the uterus
• Dull, achy pain + fatigue → Qi/Blood deficiency
• Irritability, bloating + breast tenderness → Liver Qi stagnation

being an acupuncturist doesn’t mean i suddenly became the healthiest person alive!!

sometimes i take the Midol.
sometimes i drink the iced latte.
sometimes i eat the crunchy salad and fries knowing full well what my textbooks would say about it.

and honestly? i think that makes me a better practitioner.

because healing isn’t about being perfect. it’s about understanding your body, listening to it, and doing what’s realistic for YOU in that moment.

TCM has taught me so much, but one thing it’s definitely taught me is that stress, guilt, and extremes help nobody.
