Nurse Practitioner Association of Alberta The NPAA advocates for broad Nurse Practitioner integration into all parts of the Alberta healthcare

09/06/2026

Generalist licensure is shaping the future of Nurse Practitioner practice in Canada. For acute care settings, this shift means preparing NPs with broad clinical exposure, strong diagnostic reasoning, and the confidence to care for complex patient populations across diverse environments.

It also highlights the growing importance of structured onboarding, mentorship, and post graduate specialty education through residencies, fellowships, and certifications to support NPs entering high-acuity roles. Strengthening these pathways helps ensure safe, sustainable, and high-quality patient care across the healthcare system.

What supports do you think are most important for new NPs transitioning into acute care practice?

What Is the Difference Between a Nurse Practitioner and a Registered Nurse?

Both Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses play essential roles in healthcare.

Nurse Practitioners complete additional graduate level education and advanced clinical training. This allows them to assess, diagnose, prescribe, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and manage patient care independently.

Understanding these distinctions helps patients make informed decisions about their care and highlights the important role NPs play in Alberta’s healthcare system.

Attention Alberta NPs 📣

The University of Calgary's Drs. Cathy A. Eastwood and Max Jajszczok are conducting novel research to better understand the barriers and enablers to community-based private practice nursing. They are surveying nurses across Alberta (RNs, LPNs, RPNs and NPs).

Please consider taking the survey as a way to help understand the perspectives of Alberta's NPs: https://redcap.link/NursesAlberta
