There is something you need to know when you’re caring for someone. "You're doing better than you think you are." When you're sitting beside someone you love, every decision feels enormous.
Should I call the nurse?
Should I wake the family?
Did I give the medication at the right time?
Should I say something?
Should I just sit quietly?
Then, after they're gone, the questions don't stop. They simply change.
Did I miss something?
Could I have done more?
Did they know how much I loved them?
I've learned that almost every caregiver carries these questions. Not because they failed. Because they loved deeply. Love has a way of making us question ourselves.
If you're caring for someone today...
If you're sitting at a bedside...
If you're exhausted...
If you've cried in the shower because it's the only place you could be alone...
Please hear this.
You are doing one of the hardest things a human heart can do. You won't do it perfectly. None of us do. But perfection was never what your loved one needed.
They needed you.
Your presence.
Your love.
Your hand to hold.
Years from now, you probably won't remember every medication time or every conversation. But they will have spent their final chapter wrapped in the love of someone who refused to leave. And that is a beautiful gift. If no one has told you today...
I'm proud of you.
