Higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids in midlife maymean better brain health
Diet is a key factor in brain health during development and throughout life. Omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with brain health and cognition in older adults and during childhood. However, research focusing on midlife benefits of omega-3s is lacking.
A new study published in the journal Neurology included 2,183 men and women of an average age of 46 years with no history of stroke or dementia. Researchers evaluated the association of red blood cell (RBC) omega-3 concentration in this group with MRI and other markers of cognitive health.
After adjusting for several factors, the adults with the highest percentage of omega-3 in their RBC had greater brain volume (hippocampus) and better abstract reasoning scores than those with the lowest omega-3 concentrations.
A healthy diet is one way to protect the health of the brain, and this study showed that even modest intake of omega-3 in line with dietary recommendations is enough to support better brain structure and maintain brain resilience and cognition.
Dietary recommendations for omega-3 fatty acid intake to support heart and brain health are generally 2-3 servings of fatty fish per week, or 0.5-1.0 grams of omega-3s as EPA/DHA per day in a quality fish oil supplement.
