May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month ☀️

As the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outdoors, it’s a good reminder to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

Most cases of skin cancer are preventable. A few simple habits can help reduce your risk:

☀️ Check the UV Index and protect your skin when it’s 3 or higher
👒 Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing
🌳 Seek shade, especially during peak sun hours
🧴 Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours, or after swimming/sweating
🚫 Avoid tanning beds
🔎 Check your skin once a month for new, changing, or unusual spots

If you notice a mole or spot that is changing in size, shape, colour, or appearance, or if something just doesn’t seem right, please book an appointment with your primary care provider.

At the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team, we’re here to support you with prevention, early detection, and care.

May is Hypertension Awareness Month ❤️

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is common, but many people do not know they have it. Over time, uncontrolled blood pressure can increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney disease, and other serious health concerns.
The good news? Hypertension can often be prevented, managed, and treated with the right support.

A few ways to support healthy blood pressure include:
✔️ Knowing your numbers
✔️ Measuring your blood pressure properly
✔️ Reducing sodium
✔️ Staying active
✔️ Eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
✔️ Limiting alcohol
✔️ Taking medications as prescribed, if needed

At the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team, our nurses and allied health professionals can help support patients with blood pressure monitoring, education, lifestyle changes, medication support, and chronic disease management.
If you have questions about your blood pressure, or if you are unsure whether your numbers are where they should be, please speak with your primary care provider or a member of your care team.

Learn more from by visiting Hypertension Canada. If you are interested in the programs and supports we offer, check out our website.

💙 Thank You, Patients! 💙

A big thank you to the nearly 800 patients who took the time to complete our recent patient satisfaction surveys. Your feedback helps us understand what we’re doing well, where we can improve, and how we can continue providing the best possible care to our communities.

We were grateful to receive responses from patients connected to each of our physician and nurse practitioner offices, with representation from all age groups, from under 20 to over 90 years old.

Some highlights from this year’s survey include:

✔️ 87% of respondents said they feel comfortable or very comfortable in their provider’s office
✔️ 50% reported being up to date on preventative screening
✔️ Feedback on screening barriers is already helping us improve our processes
✔️ 93% of Family Health Team program participants reported moving more after working with our Kinesiologists
✔️ 93% also reported making positive health and lifestyle changes after their visits
We were also pleased to see awareness of Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team services continue to grow, with those unaware of available services dropping from 10% last year to 5% this year.

Thank you for helping shape the future of care at MMFHT. Your voice matters. 💙

Please join us in welcoming Lindsay as the new Executive Director of the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team! 🎉

Lindsay brings more than 15 years of healthcare experience, including leadership roles within Family Health Team and Ontario Health Team settings, where she has supported primary care, research, evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives.

She strongly believes in the value of team-based primary care and is excited to be joining a rural Family Health Team and supporting the communities we serve. 💙

Outside of work, Lindsay describes herself as “outdoorsy-adjacent” 😊 and enjoys spending time outside with her teenagers, snowshoeing in the winter and kayaking as much as possible during the summer months. She’s also a self-proclaimed board game nerd and loves a good game night. 🎲

We are excited to welcome Lindsay to MMFHT and look forward to this next chapter together!

It’s hard to believe, but our longtime Executive Director, Shirley, has officially retired after 20 years of dedicated service with the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team.

Shirley has been part of MMFHT since its very beginning, helping shape the organization into what it is today through years of steady leadership, commitment, and care for both patients and staff. Her impact on our team and communities will be felt for years to come.

Recently, we had the opportunity to celebrate Shirley alongside Board members and staff with gifts, laughter, tears, cake, and many shared memories. It was a special time to reflect on all she has contributed over the past two decades and the relationships she built along the way.

While she leaves very big shoes to fill, we are grateful for the strong foundation she has built and excited for this next chapter for MMFHT as we welcome new leadership. Stay tuned in the coming days as we introduce the newest member of our leadership team.

Please join us in wishing Shirley all the very best in her well-earned retirement. Thank you for everything, Shirley. 💙

🦷 April is Oral Health Month, and we’re proud to highlight a project the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team has been participating in alongside the Guelph Wellington OHT and community partners.

This demonstration study is exploring how a preventative dental treatment called Prevora can be offered within primary care and community settings to help improve access for people who may face barriers to traditional dental care.

Prevora is a quick, non-invasive treatment being studied for its potential to support oral health and reduce issues such as bleeding gums. Good oral health is closely connected to overall health and can impact conditions such as diabetes, heart health, inflammation, and quality of life.

We are proud to support innovative, team-based approaches that look at health as a whole and help reduce barriers to care in our communities. 💙🦷

💙 It’s National Immunization Awareness Week.

Vaccines remain one of the most effective tools we have to prevent serious illness and protect individuals, families, and communities.

At the Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team, we encourage patients to stay up to date on recommended immunizations throughout every stage of life.

If you’re unsure whether you or a loved one are up to date, now is a great time to check in with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Prevention matters, and small steps today can protect your health tomorrow. 💉

The Minto-Mapleton Family Health Team is proud to support prevention, wellness, and healthy communities. 💙
